Hi, all. I'm a recent convert from FSX and am loving this simulator. My question is, the Long Range Lineup System is not always used on actual carriers. Is there a way to disable it?

Welcome!

Unfortunately no, much the same as you always have crew on all catapults at all times AFAIK.

The upcoming airboss station might have some control over whether or not certain features are operating, I wonder if @Jackjack171 can help out, as he's infinitely more knowledgeable than me on the subject.

Thanks for the reply, Northstar. I was afraid of that. What I'm trying to do is make night traps under ziplip as realistic as possible. Even with an overcast layer and reduced visability, I can still see the LRLS like 5 miles out. Also, I'm not aware of the Airboss station as I'm still a SuperNoob. What is that?

Unfortunately, this is where I have to ask that myself. From my vantage point on the Flight Deck, we never seen/saw the LRLS. The same for the drop lights. In the Tower, the Air Boss controls the lighting. He has an entire crew to help him set the lights. When the launch is complete, the Boss orders the lights aft lowered and the Landing area and lens lights come on. Also, the Beacons are already on but stay green for recovery. I assume the drop lights and LRLS come on at that same time.

Kind of longwinded but it's all coming back to me as I type. Lol

DO it or Don't, but don't cry about it. Real men don't cry!

Cheers @Jackjack171

I think based on what you've said it's safe bet to say that the control functionality for the LRLS is probably coming with the airboss station currently in development.

Think of it as the carrier equivalent of ATC/Tower that you'd see at a land based aircraft, at the moment in DCS they essentially only coordinate with aircraft in the pattern (with a fair degree of limitation, though that's more a problem with other AI aircraft) with the LSO (landing safety officer) being your approach talk-down equivalent.

Ahhhh, I see. How do you get to it?

It's WIP at the moment, will probably be around Q1/Q2 of this year if all goes to plan.

Shouldn't it have like 10NM visibility anyways?

So, if anyone wants to "backdate" their Supercarrier and turn off the LRLS, I discovered how. Open the specific supercarrier .lau file in ..../DCS World/Core Mods/tech/USS Nimitz/Database   and change the LRLS line to false.

Here is a test I did without the LRLS. It's a lot more intense when you get visual reference tothe ship only a few seconds out:
