dsprag Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 This was a fun thread. I haven't been doing the chopper sims as long as some of you, but I remember Longbow, and I distinctly recall unwrapping Longbow 2 for Christmas '97. Can't wait to see this in DCS.
Viper1970 Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 (edited) I still have all those good old titles (Janes Longbow incl. mission, Longbow 2, DI's Apache Longbow, and Mindscape's Team Apache) running on my retro rig . There is also a lot of other good old simulation stuff installed, too (whole Janes Series, Flanker Officers Edition, Flanker 2.5, Lock On ...). I still love those legendary titles and have nearly all of them from MSDOS over Windows 9X, to Windows XP. Mogster Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Just finished reader Tim Peake’s book, The UK astronaut and AH64 instructor. He mentions how he had DI’s Longbow on his PC when he was a teenager and how he found it surprisingly accurate when he came to fly the real thing.

There are the typical arcade things that were ported to Hind from 1996 later on, but they are really fairly minor things. Like how the targeting is instantaneous as the targeting system (or digital WSO as for Hind) is all seeing as long you have LOS on the targets. But considering that, the flight modeling is great, the different main weapons and their targeting system are great and even the missiles behavior is acceptable. Considering that game is from 1995, it delivered all the important main parts of the Apache, and it did so very well. The flight modeling is surprisingly good when set to Realistic mode, all the way for the vortex ring state and ground effect... If those games could be flown with better graphics (higher resolution really) it would look amazing even today. But 640x480 is bad considering drawing definition that you can't separate so well the different shades of terrain. I would pay AAA title money to see those games in VR, as close as possible to the originals but just in a nice 3D cockpit and have the helmet sight usable... i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.
