Tango Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Can you fly this sim without TrackIR, or is it a "must"? I've tried TrackIR in the past, and I couldn't get on with it, but I'm not sure how much it would be needed. Is it possible to pan with the mouse (e.g. right-click and hold to pan)? On the flip-side, those who have TrackIR - how do you find it? Can you make it so TrackIR only moves the view when you hold a modifier key? Best regards, Tango.
aphelion79 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 (edited) It pissed me off the first few times I used it until I started fooling around with the deadzones. Make the view right in front of you a pretty decent deadzone and make the curve slow down around the middle (i.e. straight ahead view) and it solves the problem of "not being able to look exactly ahead" This deadzone depends on how closely you sit to your monitor and how much you move your head to look around at your monitor compared to how you use your eyes to view it. After you set it up comfortably for yourself it becomes second nature! My only problem is when I look up I loose tracking which makes the view do funny things... lol I'm thinking of getting that USB headset attachment and that should work better for me I think! (Also I don't use the TrackIR Hat... I use the vector attachment and put it ontop of my headset band! this is why I think the one meant for the headset would work better) The vector clip (mines older style than this one even!) The TrackClipPRO (headset attachment) TrackIR 3 needs a Vector Activation (comes with the first image) to work with TrackClipPRO TrackIR 4 already has Vector Activation and can be used with the TrackClipPRO Edited July 18, 2008 by aphelion79
eurofor Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I have TrackIR 4 and also the TrackClip attached to my headset. It takes a little time to get used to it but now I can't play without it! It's like an extra hand and you just use your normal head movement so you don't have to think about it. I even forget it's there. Sometimes I realise I'm trying to move my head to look around when I'm watching LO or DCS videos. It probably works without it but you're gonna miss out on the immersion and situational awareness it adds. ThunderChief Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I even forget it's there. Sometimes I realise I'm trying to move my head to look around when I'm watching LO or DCS videos. This happens in every producers note to me and thats the moment when I realize that I can't wait no more for release :joystick:
GGTharos Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 THanks to TrackIR I had a great time lead-turning another helicopter that would occasioanlly want to dissapear behind some airframe feature. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Tango Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 I shall have to seriously consider it then!! Best regards, Tango.
ThunderChief Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Can you make it so TrackIR only moves the view when you hold a modifier key? Yes! You have 3 hotkeys you can use within every game. 1. On / Off 2. Toggle sensitivy 3. Reset the POV
zakobi Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I don't have a TrackIR, but i've heard that using helmet mountet sight on LO should be a lot easier, beside you get a more real expirence...
ThunderChief Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 In BS you will even need to move left and right to reach some switches behind the stick. Compared to a fighter, the visibility in the Ka-50 cockpit is very restricted, and moving your head with 6 DOF is for sure a great advantage even more than in LO.
JEFX Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 (edited) Hi! and Welcome to the forum! Once you start using Tir for a while, you cant go back. I must say that I found the adaptation difficult at first, but as Aphelion said, you have to make your own profile with a small dead zone in the middle, where you can rest your head and neck without being stiff. You also need to program a key that is easily reachable (I have it on my HOTAS) to recenter the Tir (the minute you stand up of go away you will need to recenter, and the feeling of ease of use depends very much on how you did center with your head really relaxed). I also use another startegy. I have programmed a button on my HOTAS that takes me directly to the snapviews and I have edited my snapviews (within LOFC with the alt-KPdel key). Therefore, with the press of one button I get a fixed view (say of the dashboard, or a zoomed in view of the HUD) and it comes in handy if you get desoriented looking around. Some people (my younger bro for example) hate it because it moves too much : make yourself smoother curves and add some smoothing. Anyway, I cannot imagine how to fly without it (just padlocking a spot on the ground while making a turn at 60 degrees is so realistic!). Good luck! Tango Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 DAMN! You just made BS more expensive!!! :D Sounds like it is a "must" then. ;) Best regards, Tango.
zakobi Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 was wondering if you can bang your head against the side...
GGTharos Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 If you put some plexi where you're playing yes ... :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
zakobi Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 It was more on if your in-game head movement would stop...
GGTharos Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 There are limits tot he TIR motion. I don't think you can hit your head on the glass - I did know what you mean, I was just trying to be funny ;D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
DaWu Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I have the TrackIR4 and I wont fly without it any more. Its great. You need 1-2 hours to get used to it and once you have adjusted the sensitivities and deadzones its awesome. And once the Apache module is out we can aim with our head ;)
GGTharos Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Pilot gets the gun! ;) Ka-50 v Ah-64 duels will become the stuff of legend! :D And once the Apache module is out we can aim with our head ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Tango Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 I thought that wasa already possible in the Ka-50? What's with the helmet mounted sight then?? Best regards, Tango.
GGTharos Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 The Shkval has a much slower traverse rate than the apache's sensors, AFAIK. In addition the gun elevation and azimuth is quite restricted on the Ka-50. ThunderChief Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Pilot gets the gun! ;) Ka-50 v Ah-64 duels will become the stuff of legend! :D An interresting document what might happen when the Hind joins the fight http://stinet.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA071904&Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc.pdf
GGTharos Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 ... against an ages old AH-1? It already happened in Iran/Iraq. The Hind wasn't too impressive - neither was the Cobra. What is really interesting about this document is tactics :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Cowboy10uk Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 While I have had track Ir 3 Pro with the vector addon, I have also struggled to get it to work right, It seems whenever i move my head to look or click on the cockpit, the view either jumps all over the place and spins round or I cant keep my head still enough to click on the switch. While i have heard many many people say how good this device is, and I have to say by the vids it seems to work well in Blackshark, Can someone please please tell me how to set the damn thing up so it works as well as that :D Hell im that excited about blackshark, I have even got it back out of the loft and reset the track IR up yesterday in the hope I can have it working in time for blackshark. If I can't get this working are there view controls inside balckshark that will allow is to control the view around the cockpit similar to Track Ir.
