Dunkan Aidaho Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Hi guys. Since I'm start visiting english part of the forum more often I have some questions about english grammar (maybe slang?) wich are not covered by books. I appreciate your help. First: Ive noticed that english punctuation is very simple comared to russian one, but seems that even existing rules are not compulsory here? Im asking this because russian without proper punctuation looks like crap, and it is not I want my posts look like. Second: I dont know where I got those "Ive"^^, but already using it:) I suppose it mean "I where", but I'm not sure. Is it slang? Third: according to english manuals I must wrote "I" always with a capital letter, but many people here using "i" instead. Shoud I treat this as error? Fourth: is the word "crap" refer to strong language (If so I'm sorry about using them)? Thank's for the answers. 1 Open your eyes, open yor mind... ©Guano Apes Sorry for my bad english.
Allo Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 (edited) English isn't my best subject, but I'll give it a go. These are not slang words. "I've" is a contraction of "I have." in the past tense. "I'm" is a contraction of "I am." in the present tense. "I where", I think you mean "I were." Which you would say "I have" or "I've." where = in what place. were = that's a hard one . Sort of like was, but in the second person. "I " is always written in capitals. Crap is slang. I guess some would take offence, some wouldn't. Probably a border line swear word. I hope I have been helpful and given you the right information. Cosmonaut Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 You're doing great Dunkan Aidaho, well done. Your English is at a very high standard, just remember that English is very flexible when it comes to forums in terms of grammar, spelling, structure, hmm well pretty much everything LOL. On the forums we sometimes write like we speak, if you get what I mean and we can be extremely lazy too, for example "i" should always be written as "I", as you mentioned, but holding down the shift key can be very time consuming when you're trying spout out your latest diatribe of nonsense heh :D . Frostie Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 As Allo said, this is still good grammar, just that the apostrophe ( ' ) is replacing letters, e.g. I'll = I will She'll = She will Can't = Cannot I've = I have I'm = I am As for crap, you can talk crap, take a crap, and even clean up your crap, but like picking your nose don't do it if you want to impress. "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. Boberro Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Is it important to use all this past tense times? Or one common past tense (I was, were and bought, went, pork-ed, baked) than all to something various accidents? Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... thereminqblank Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Do you guys use british or american english in Australia? I think mostly 'British' english is used in Australia For example: - We spell colour, like in the UK, but in America it is color. - Recognise - same as the UK, but in America, it is supervize But there are some words that are just pure 'Shtraarlian :P "Unholy Roller" [sIGPIC]http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/images/userbars/A-10C_UserBar_01.gif[/sIGPIC]
