herig2 Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Does any one know if the Russian convoys follow a order of vehicle placement, such as the accompanying SAMs or AAA. Would they be at the lead, second from the lead, or the last man bringing up the rear ? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Renato71 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 The column will follow the order that you set up. First vehicle in column will act as leader. When you create a column, you have to be careful about the order in which you insert individual vehicles. You cannot add by types and hope they will arrange themselves according to some pattern, as there is no predefined pattern. I hope this anwsers your question... I'm selling MiG-21 activation key. Vekkinho Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 I believe herig2 asked for a RL conwoys, and placement of AAA and SAMs in the column! To answer his question I'll say that there's no defined pattern in the way Russian army forms a conwoy! No point in having "tell tale" patterns where Shilka is always 3rd, Osa 6th and Tunguska 11th in the column, same for all conwoys! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Peyoteros Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 (edited) Logically there should be something in the middle, to put umbrella on the whole convoy... and something for desert at the beginning and the end. there also could be scouts ahead of convoy and behind... I think every situation depending on the location relief is individual... TOR's are good,,, It's my assumptions, they are not based on anything but me trying to cover my convoy with lots of the good stuff :D P.S. herig2, say hi to your lady! Renato71 Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 As for real-life convoy, there are set rules how a column is deployed when on a move, but that depends on type of unit. But, herig's question was under section "Lock On - General Discussion" so I assumed he was thinking about LO columns :) herig, what do you say? I'm selling MiG-21 activation key. herig2 Posted August 3, 2008 Author Posted August 3, 2008 Thanks for your responses, I was looking for what the air defence of a convoy in RL would be, and to follow that placement in LO's ME. Peyoteros, she says hi back. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Highwayman-Ed Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 (edited) In my experience, ADS will be spread throughout the convoy. No two ADS vehicles will be grouped together to maximise their coverage, and to prevent them being eliminated in one go by an attack. there is however usually a placement of heavy equipment toward the front and rear, with softer vehicles in the centre. In wartime, large convoys will also split into smaller groupings, and have seperation between those groups also so that they're not one long line of vehicles begging for a well placed CBU run :) TOR's however, I would not expect to roll with the convoy due to their range. I'm not an expert with Russian SAM systems, but in the Western world, I would expect to see a SAM unit that works in batteries to leapfrog each other so that out of the group of 4 say, 2 are moving forward, whilst 2 provide an umbrella and then establish the next unbrella whilst the two at the rear, then move forward. I would expect to find Shilka's, Tunguska's, Gecko's and Gopher's (edit: Strela 1 & 10) as part of a convoy from the Russian units that you have available in Lock On. I know that TOR's can fire on the move, but I would not expect that this would be an optimal engagement scenario given the terrain that the convoy may be traveling through.
