Hey there, working on learning the Hornet and had a couple questions.

1) I know the theoretical difference between the A/G radar's PEN and FAN modes, however when flying around attempting to pick out ships from a distance I could see no discernable difference. From 40 miles out the radar picked up all ships in the ocean just fine with both PEN and FAN modes. I was under the impression PEN mode just looks in a narrow beam directly in front of you (per Chuck's guide). Can someone please explain the in-sim difference in DCS World?

2) How do you get rid of a ground target lock on the HSI? I was using the A/G radar to practice tagging coordinates out in the ocean for my JSOW but want to clear it out/reset it. I tried pressing the "undesignated/nose wheel" button but that simply cleared the target from the A/G radar but not the HSI. I tried pressing "ERASE JSOW" but that didn't seem to do anything.

In TOO mode, the JSOW (JDAMs too) will always write the target coordinates whenever a TGT position exists. Whatever the last coordinates written to it were, that's what the coordinates will be. With the weapon selected, the weapon's target location will be displayed on the HUD, and the HSI with the LAR circle. De-selecting the weapon (which will de-power it and require it to realign, be advised) or switching to another weapon will remove the TGT indications and LAR circle.

The ERASE function for both JSOWs and JDAMs will brick them, by design. It will erase all crypto keys and classified data from the weapon's memory, rendering it completely unusable. When pressing the ERASE option, you'll have two options to accept or cancel the erasure. The purpose of this function is to erase any sensitive onboard data in the event the weapon needs to be jettisoned.
