joey45 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 RT has it on the spot, RTS, RPG, FPS is completly different from a SIM. But 95% of testers want to play the game before anyone else does. If ED want to test the MP side to destruction then they might aproch LO sqns themselves and let the Sqn leaders pick the testers. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. "Me, the 13th Duke of Wybourne, here on the ED forums at 3 'o' clock in the morning, with my reputation. Are they mad.." https://ko-fi.com/joey45
RedTiger Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 (edited) Beta testing is a funny thing and something that I will never volunteer to do ever again. I would have to be paid and paid in the equivalent of a very nice part-time job to ever do it again. Yes, you get to play before others do but this can be a bad thing. How would you like to beta test a roleplaying game, playing the thing "for real" for months only to have all your accomplishments wiped out when the final product is released? Would you feel like buying it and doing that all over again? I can imagine beta testing the Ka-50 for years and then getting the retail product. "Oh goody...I get to fly the the Ka-50. How new and exciting." :D EDIT: maybe you get another type of enjoyment, one of seeing people's reactions to the finished product you helped become a reality. Like an actor in a movie, you already know how it ends but you get to watch other people's suspense. :) Edited August 12, 2008 by RedTiger 1
VMFA117_Poko Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 (edited) I do it because I really want to help out.I'm sure you all betas from english and russian side of the forum are doing it right. I have much faith in you. I like also the idea of allowing the community to help with some issues ie. proper real airfields diagrams, pilot photos for textures, infos about composition and placement of ground unit groups, real look of tracers colours, etc. That's really good. We all have a feeling of building wonder sim together in some way. But beta-testing is for real geeks. I would never ask for something like that. I think many ppl here understand that. You don't need to convince us. Edited August 12, 2008 by Poko24
borchi_2b Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 hmm, the only reason why you clud become a tester is, you are a darn good modeller and ask them if you can do some stuff for them, for free. that would be some way, but not even i tried it, so stop dreaming, there is no way, unfortunatly, but first let black shark appear on the market http://www.polychop-sims.com
Merlin1606687779 Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) I was one of those that helped tile the Balkans theater for Falcon 4, I'm not part of LP or anything, I didn't get paid, it was all volunteer work and RedTiger hit the nail right on the head with the quote below. I get great satisfaction from pride when i read how much people like playing in that theater. I'd do it again if LP asked me and for the same pay rate. :) they only need to ask. Triggerhappy69 Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 @Fahrenheit007 Unless there is something new I'm not aware of, keep in mind that with ED a "beta tester" is quite a bit different than what you may be used to. I won't hide the fact that I wish they would think up some some new title for ED testers because I think the term is misleading. To be a tester you generally have to contribute something meaningful to their efforts. For example a SME, or a 3D artist, or maybe an acutal military pilot. Contrast this to what being a "beta tester" means on every other software project I've heard of or been involved with; a bug reporter. I've beta tested computer games and my mother has acutally beta tested accounting software, believe it or not. In these cases our main effort went into bug reporting. "Do X, Y happens and it shouldn't" or "I get a CTD when I try to do X" type of stuff. My mother may have actually contributed more since she's an accountant using accounting software, like maybe an ease of use issue, but mostly it was just bugs. In the end it was making sure that a nearly complete or fully complete piece of software ran smoothly as intended. HEAR HEAR..! We all seem to be chasing the "Wet Beta Tester Dream" here.. Forgetting that the guys who code this simulator probably have some kind of goal they are working towards. And I'm guessing they're not strangers to flight simming to..? Beta tester contribute back to the makers.. And I'm guessing it's not ALL fun and games all the time..! Learning a simulator because we want to get a head start before the Helicopter Wing of our squadron opens is not Beta Testing.. .... but there's no shame in asking even so..?:smartass: "But (504)Brewber said they were'nt friendly.. So I took'em out.!" [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
RedTiger Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 And nope, I had to do some really good flying and some ass kissing to get on LOMAC. Then it was just a request/asking to get some specific stuff done for BS. So you gotta establish yourself in the community to get the devs to look at you. Mind you the fiasco with GRAW2 betas.. yeesh that was bad. Anyways maybe this should be stickied since every time it seems to crop up and yet the same stuff gets posted like a broken record? A sticky would be a great idea! Something like "To those interested in beta testing DCS; please read before posting". Lay it out in the open and explain the policy behind testing so its clear to everyone who visits.
Pilotasso Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 To be a beta tester is more than just getting the software in some hidden FTP server. It takes commitement and responsability. just this last part rules me out. :D .
