I don't know if this still happens, but Creative sound card drivers for example used to be notorious for that... For 5.1 Surround , #4 HDMI out of my RTX 2060 SUper FE is going to my Sony 5.1 AV Receiver (shown as AVAMP NVIDIA High Definition Audio) in Windows sound devices.
