shake307 Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 I seem to be having a problem with the Viggen in that it seems to ground loop on me about 80-90 percent of my landings. I haven't really seen anything about others having this problem, so it must be me. All I can think is that I am braking way too hard and it causes the plane to swap ends on me. Anyone else have this issue? What do I do to alleviate this? I think maybe brake less aggressively. ASUS X570 Plus TUF MOBO, Ryzen 3900X CPU, EVGA 2080 Super GPU, 32GB RAM, 500GB SSD
iFez Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 Yeah, it can get a bit unstable if you use too much wheel brakes. Basically I just use the reverse thruster to slow down mostly, and then use the wheel brakes for the final part. You can arm the reverse thruster before landing. This way when there is weight on the nose wheel, the reverse thruster will engage. Once the reverse thruster engages, go full throttle to slow down. When the light for the transonic warning comes on (top right of the front panel), go back to idle and continue slowing down as necessary using the wheel brakes. The reason the light comes on is to warn you that your speed is getting low, increasing the chance of compressor stall I believe because of reingestion of the reverse thrust exhaust. Don't forget to disengage the reverse thruster, otherwise you will wonder why you are going backwards when you want to taxi 2
Machalot Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 I find if you reverse thrust too long and end up too slow, it can generate a destabilizing yaw moment. Make sure to follow @iFez's advice about the red light. "Subsonic is below Mach 1, supersonic is up to Mach 5. Above Mach 5 is hypersonic. And reentry from space, well, that's like Mach a lot."
shake307 Posted July 9, 2021 Author Posted July 9, 2021 Well, color me smarter. I did not know about the transonic light warning. Thanks, iFez. I will see what I can do with the technique you describe. 1 ASUS X570 Plus TUF MOBO, Ryzen 3900X CPU, EVGA 2080 Super GPU, 32GB RAM, 500GB SSD
TOViper Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 Best ist to treat her like a lady when using wheelbrakes In case I dont have long runway I usually use half pedal deflection for wheel brakes and full reverser until red light comes on, then use 75% wheel brakes until the aircraft comes to full stop. This is my own "DCS procedure", let's see if RL Viggen pilots come in here for some more advice.
