450Devil Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 As someone who is regularly shot down when flying in a Warbird, it seems unrealistic that the parachute immediately deploys when I bail out. Pity that automatic deployment of the parachute cannot be disabled. It would be more realistic for the pilot to have to deploy their parachute after free falling for some distance. The rate of decent in game in a parachute appears to be about 280 meters per minute which is reasonably accurate given a mass of 80 kilograms and a canopy area of about 80 square meters. The same pilot free falling will decent at about 1800 meters per minute as their canopy area is about a meter square. An in-game pilot bailing out at high altitude (say 8000 meters as happened on my last sortie) would expire due to oxygen starvation if their rate of decent was only 280 meters per minute. Just my view on a way to improve DCS Warbirds experience. 3
grafspee Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 If i was a pilot i would like to deploy it as soon as possible You don't want to decelerate from high speed, and im not sure if equipment was designed to do such things. If you read any memoirs of luftwaffe pilots, you'll find out that they actually deployed their chutes as close to earth as possible especially at late stages of war when usaaf pilots start their "ace hunting", shooting already downed lw pilots in their parachutes. Another threat was shooting from ground forces, both sides did that. If it was a case i would wait till last moment with bailing out as well It would be nice if we could deploy as we please. I would ask as well for ability to kill bailed pilots as well flak keep shooting downed pilots as well. This whole pack would make sense Edited August 18, 2021 by grafspee 1 System specs: I7 14700KF, Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite, 64GB DDR4 3600MHz, Gigabyte RTX 4090,Win 11, 48" OLED LG TV + 42" LG LED monitor

Shots from ground forces is one thing, but I thought fighters shooting at bailed pilots is/was a war crime. edit: at least highly frowned upon. On the topic of being able to do that in game, we’ve had that conversation before; I’m on the side of “not necessary”. Edited August 19, 2021 by cordite

On the topic of being able to do that in game, we’ve had that conversation before; I’m on the side of “not necessary”. I don't think it was war crime, but it was generally against pilots "code of honor" and considered as a murder for most. However it still happened every now and then by any side (people being...yeah, people) but, only systematically by usaaf at late stages of war. Some usaaf pilots claimed they received unwritten orders from their officers to shoot enemy pilots parachuting. It's not on my top list of necessary things in game but as it was possible/did happen irl i would like to have that possibility in name of realism.
