Slowdive Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 There's a YouTube video with a pilot talking about putting the HSI on an MFD, so I assume this is a real thing. Will that be coming at some point in the future?
LieutenantFalcon Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 You mean the EHSI? It's situated between your legs. Parts of it like heading, direction to steerpoint and range are basically always reflected on the HUD, so it doesn't have a seperate page like it does on the F/A-18. For the F-18 the HSI page has a lot of functions outside of being the HSI, the F-16 does most of those functions through the DED pages (like changing steerpoint location, altitude warning, tacan/ils settings)
Slowdive Posted October 28, 2021 Author Posted October 28, 2021 Yes, the "EHSI". It's fairly inconvenient to use that tiny instrument due to size and location, and would make sense to be able to mirror it to an MFD. I ask, because an actual F-16 pilot mentioned that this is possible in the real aircraft.
Deano87 Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 (edited) The only way I know of having the HSI on a MFD would be in a jet that has been upgraded with the CDU (Center Display Unit) in which case the display literally replaces the physical HSI. Perhaps that's what the pilot was referring to? N Note: Pic is just representative of CDU, aircraft is an upgraded F-16AM. Slowdive Posted October 28, 2021 Author Posted October 28, 2021 Reference this video and timestamp. He pretty clearly states that you could put an HSI on an MFD in an older F-16. https://youtu.be/tfb2L-blz4Y?t=140
Deano87 Posted October 28, 2021 Posted October 28, 2021 (edited) I expect he meant the HSD. This really isn’t a thing in the F-16. Frederf Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 Yeah he meant HSD as he's listing off all the MFD formats.
Slowdive Posted October 30, 2021 Author Posted October 30, 2021 I suppose that's possible, but the guy seems pretty sharp.
Deano87 Posted October 30, 2021 Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) You have to also consider that he's trying to translate military lingo into something easier to understand for the lay person. Sorry to disappoint but the F-16 doesn’t have this functionality.
