I have been holding out for awhile. I have been thinking about upgrading from 1080ti to 3070 or 3080 (not TI). I fly mostly VR have a Rift S and will eventually upgrade it to something else as well. Question is it worth it to upgrade right now to one of the above said cards?

If your plan is to upgrade your VR id say just hold out till the 40xx series if you can.

VR is demanding enough in it's current generation, once the newer generations with higher resolutions come out you will need some serious GPU power to push all those pixels.

Yeah if you have got a 1080ti its not worth it going to a 3070. If and its a big if, you find a 3080 at a price right for you go for that. Failing that wait for prices to stabilise a bit next year, fingers crossed! Seriously though I think a 3070 might be a sidestep to be honest with you.

To put it into perspective I play 4k and had a 2080ti. I bought a 6800xt and have used a 3080 and a 3080ti. I wish I had waited saved more and bought a 3080ti.

I played in VR with a 1080 Ti for quite some time and was thinking about an upgrade as well. But seeing that my VRAM was full most of the time in VR, I didn´t want to got with the 3070 or 3080, didn´t want to downgrade on VRAM.

Ultimately, I gave in and got a 3090. But, whatever you upgrade to, with DCS in VR you will still have to make some compromises. I can run the game with shadows and MSAA enabled and get about the same performance as with the 1080 Ti. But at these settings, I can´t run 100% resolution (with a Reverb G2)

You will probably get some benefit from a 3080, but I´d say considering the current price tags, it´s not really worth it. On the other hand, I don´t think that the 40xx series will be any cheaper when they come out.

That a fair point about the Vram. Playing at 4k Vram is important to me too. I had my 6800xt installed and literally swapped out for my friends EVGA 3080. So thats 16gb of GDDR down to 10gb of GDDR X, it did not effect/bring a drop in frames/fps. They were actually pretty much identical. Bear in mind that was no tweaking just fitting it and installing latest drivers etc. I only had the 3080 in my machine for a couple of hours on an afternoon. The Nvidia 3080 and above cards having the X version of Vram means that the size of the Vram is not an indication on performance.

The "Next" generation VR headsets is already for sale, if you have 2000 quids+ to splash at them, note that prices are likely to go down as the actual Crisis recess in the (hopefuly near) future.

For the time being, I'm sticking to my 1080Ti.

A 5600X seems to fill the bill perfectly, now we have to look at something like an RTX 2080 or 3070 for GPU, that's up to £1,700.00...
