scampaboy Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I’ve been looking at getting a different cpu. I’ve currently got the following system. i5 9600k oc 4.9 mhz RTX 3060 64GB ram SSD and NVMe I really like my 9600 k it’s surprisingly a great CPU for DCS quite good single core performance. I don’t really have the cash to upgrade to the latest or last gen intel and motherboard. So I’m thinking to get a second hand 9900k keep my current noctura cooler (which is great btw) will I see a performance benefit for DCS ? Is it a waste of money that I could use on a new stick or something similar. Or is there a storming new generation 9600k that would work out the same price in a combo. I’m not gambling on future performance with multicore support I will assess the performance situation when that drops and upgrade then anyway. My usage is DCS only with web browsing and the odd spreadsheet/word doc. No video editing etc.
Bossco82 Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 My opinion is that upgrading from a 9600k to a 9900k will give you almost no performance increase in DCS. Especially if you already have a solid 4.9Ghz overclock. 1
Hector45 Posted November 29, 2021 Posted November 29, 2021 I agree with Bossco, waste of money, spend the money elsewhere for sure. 1 Modules: F-14A/B | F-15C | F-16C | F/A-18C | SU-33 | Spitfire Mk IX | AH-64D | UH-1 | Super Carrier | Combined Arms | Persian Gulf | Syria | NTTR Setup: VKB Gunfighter Mk.III F-14 CE HOTAS | Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle | MFG Crosswind V3 | Custom switch panel | Tek Creations F14 Display Panel | Custom F14 Left Vertical Console | Custom IR Tracker | Custom butt kicker PC: i7 11700K | 64GB G-Skill DDR4 3600MHz | EVGA GeForce RTX 3080Ti FTW3 | DCS dedicated 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD | 3440x1440 144hz 34" ultrawide
scampaboy Posted November 30, 2021 Author Posted November 30, 2021 (edited) I kind of thought the same, just needed it confirming. I was thinking maybe I could leverage the GPU on board the chip for streaming or video but then I thought I never stream or really make videos. I do sometimes fly in VR though I should have added that in the first post, VR for rotary wing and 2D for the rest. I’m wondering if it might be better to spend it on a collective. xoxen Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 I upgraded from a 4790K to a 5800X with zero benefit in performance. At that time I had a GTX 1080Ti. Upgrading from that to the RTX 3080 brought up to 50% increase. So I guess it is the same in your system. You can only raise the performance by upgrading the GPU. AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus, 64GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600 CL16, Asus TUF Gaming RTX 4080 OC, Windows 11 64bit Home Premium, TrackIR 5 with TrackClip: Pro!, Virpil MongoosT-50CM3 Base + TM Warthog Stick + 7cm extension + WINWING Orion 2 with F-15EX grips, Cougar MFDs with 8" displays, Saitek Rudder Pedals, Samsung Odyssey G9 49" 5120x1440 @120 Hz
Lurker Posted December 7, 2021 Posted December 7, 2021 As someone who recently did the exactly same thing, I can tell you that for the most part it's not worth it. However, I DO have a much more capable graphics card than you do, and the i9 does provide quite a bit of headroom with regards to the i5 with regards to overclocking. (At least mine did). It did also improve and limited the framedrops that occurred when playing in VR. At least until the second to last patch that actually stopped me from playing DCS completely. So in short, in your case I doubt you will see much, if any difference with that upgrade in DCS World. Specs: Win10, i5-13600KF, 32GB DDR4 RAM 3200XMP, 1 TB M2 NVMe SSD, KFA2 RTX3090, VR G2 Headset, Warthog Throttle+Saitek Pedals+MSFFB2 Joystick.
