Wash_0ut Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 Coming back to DCS after a long time putting together a new build. Currently have the following components: i5 11400 Galax 2070 super OC Wanting to know the capabilities of the gpu, in particular and if I would be able to run a quest 2 decently? Likewise do I need 32 gb of ram? Any other recommendations are much appreciated.
Lange_666 Posted December 3, 2021 Posted December 3, 2021 If you have the budget, 32MB is not a waste, depending on your resolution and settings, DCS uses easily more then 16GB. GPU is OK, comparable to my 1080ti, looking the hardware reviews, sometimes (depending on the game) it performs a bit better or a bit worse then my 1080ti. If you can run a Quest 2 decently will be up to your expectations, my VR settings are quite a bit lower then my 2D settings to make it run smooth and then that's always at half de refreshrate (40Hz for the Rift-S), full refresh (80Hz) i can not maintain, not even with all low settings. But locked at 40Hz (unlocked is way to stuttery), lower settings even multi-player is quite good. But then your expectations may vary. Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Monitors: LG 27GL850-B27 2560x1440 + Samsung SyncMaster 2443 1920x1200, HOTAS: Warthog with Virpil WarBRD base, MFG Crosswind pedals, TrackIR4, Rift-S, Elgato Streamdeck XL. Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!
Boomer_G-Loc Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 I don't want to get shredded for my simplicity here, but last year I simply ordered one of them pre-made gamers from an outfit called Cyberpowerpc. It has an i5, an envidia geforce gtx 1660 super 6, 550gb SSD, and 8g memory, and so far its been ripping very well thru DCS and other things I have, like Space Engine, & Blender3D. and i'm using a big television monitor on it hooked thru hdmi, with trackIR, and logitech extreme 3d pro joystick in the games. Still waiting on delivery of my Thrustmaster stick, throttle & rudder combo, and VKB NXT joystick, so I don't know how those work out yet. Hope that kind of benchmark helps you out.... 1
Boosterdog Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 (edited) As Lange says its going to depend entirely on your values and your expectations. Any map can happily munch up most of your 16GB of RAM and the newer ones will use that first 16GB as an apiritif even in light missions. Multiplayer is also demanding in that respect I understand. The 11400F isnt a slouch but I dont know if, in its current single core application, DCS VR needs more than 4.4Ghz. Overclocking the chip isnt an option. so this as well as your GPU are factors. If you have the components build it and see. If you havent got the VR set yet and cant trial one, you'll probably be stepping into the unknown as no two player's needs and expectations are the same and players have different bars at which the VR experience overcomes the necessary reduction in graphical quality. DCS is, supposedly, on the cusp becomming multi-core and using Vulkan but no-one knows how soon this will be seen or how and by how much it will benefit VR and 2D. With that said, and given the expense you would have to incur for any meaningful upgrade to your GPU or CPU sucking it to see may not be the end of the world even if it falls short currently. Wash_0ut Posted December 5, 2021 Author Posted December 5, 2021 Cheers guys. I think I might go for 32 gb even though I was intending for 16 gb only. I currently have 3 24 inch 1080p monitors. I think I'm going to roll with that for the time being or get an ultrawide. Anyone got experience with triples vs ultrawide? 1
