Im admittedly a rookie RIO but enthused about learning it,My question is in singleplayer instant action (cold start at sochi)I tune the preset to the correct freq. for the tower/atc after electrical power and air is on ,I attempt to ask for permission for start up and get no reponse, I get the freq.from off the kneeboard for sochi so i know its right and its in the presets ,does anyone know what im doing wrong? thanks in advance.............

Mind that only VHF and UHF freqs will work as a radio. Also set AM/FM mode and transmission modes properly. Use proper PTT button to communicate.

of course im on the back radio VHF/UHF and in T/R /TR/G, but The PTT? not the menus for comms with the tower?I wasnt aware you could use voice to communicate with the AI.....I dont use Voice attack/viacom pro.  also which do you use AM or FM?I was under the impression you could use either one although I chose FM.

Thanks for your response,it is appreciated.

You have two radios in the Tomcat and you need to transmit over the correct radio, that you have tuned to the ATC. In the front pit you have the microphone switch on the throttle (that's what @draconus meant by PPT), which you can push in either direction, depending if you want to talk over radio 1 or radio 2. In the rear pit you have to use the radio select switch on the lefthand side, to select which of the radios you want to use to transmit, followed by the right foot pedal to transmit (yes, the RIOs PTT switches are the pedals).
The DCS radio menu should show the name on its top.

If you just use the generic comms button, then you will just shout from the cockpit and the ATC won't hear you, as it is too far away (unlike the ground crew).

RIO can communicate by ICS (that's your usual comms menu, mostly to talk to the ground crew), AN/ARC-182 and AN/ARC-159 (one PTT mic "button" for each radio, there will be comm menu too, the "voice" is simualted). You can't use freqs lower than 100MHz for communication in the Tomcat even if you can set such freq.

Just tested in the back seat from cold start. I ask for the ground power, set radio manual mode, 127.00MHz AM, T/R mode, use mic button for RIO radio (default Ralt+\) to contact Sochi ATC. 256MHz also works fine.

So when you key the mic you get a menu not just a click for the mic?

Yes, you then choose the receiver and message from the selected radio. If the radio is not set correctly you send the messages into nowhere and cannot hear the one you wanted to.

MP comms usually have dedicated PTT keys to really talk to others via radio using SRS mod or DCS Voice Chat, discord etc.
