East Afghanistan Development Update Report

We are committed to delivering the Afghanistan East project into Early Access in the nearest future, and to ensuring that it meets the expected quality standards.

Our primary focus is currently centered on creating essential airfields and ensuring they operate seamlessly. We are also carefully refining and enriching the areas surrounding these sites to minimize any need for later adjustments after the initial release.

Beyond the airfields, we are enhancing existing models and introducing new, unique ones to more closely reflect the local real-world environment. This includes the addition of various infrastructure elements such as fuel stations, administrative buildings, and cultural or religious landmarks.

Simultaneously, we are developing a detailed, non-destructive road network across Afghanistan. We are also significantly expanding the map’s overall data, incorporating an unprecedented number of settlements, agricultural areas, and industrial zones. This surpasses any previous DCS map in terms of scope and density.

On the technical front, we are improving ground textures and employing new algorithms to create more detailed normal maps. These refinements will bring greater visual depth and realism to the terrain.

As we prepare to release the second part of the Afghanistan map, the entire project will benefit from an expanded main map area, albeit at a lower fidelity, to support aircraft carrier operations, catering to you, our most dedicated enthusiasts.

Optimization efforts are ongoing, and we appreciate your understanding during the Early Access phase. Many planned features for the Afghanistan theater remain in development and will be introduced in future updates during the polishing stage. Completing all planned elements of the Afghanistan project represents a significant undertaking, both in terms of workload and time.

We are delighted to announce that our new DCS: East Afghanistan region is now available in the latest DCS update! You will also see some great improvements to the southwest region!

This new area leverages our latest map technology and lessons learned from previous terrains, including the Southwest region. The eastern region of the Afghan map is characterised by its mountainous terrain interspersed with agricultural areas around Bagram and along waterways. Kabul, the capital and largest city in Afghanistan, includes several points of interest such as hospitals, historical sites, monuments, and unique neighbourhoods. The Eastern region also includes the urban areas of Bagram, Gardez, Jalalabad, and Khost and 10 new highly-detailed airfields:

• Bagram
• Kabul
• Jalalabad
• Gardez
• Khost
• Sharana
• Bamyan

I took a harrier for a sightseeing tour last night around eastern Afghanistan.   Stunning looking scenery, great job.

I’d forgotten the start time for the mission, so on the way back to base, had sunset.  Simply stunning in VR.  Made the hairs on neck stand up.

My thanks to all of the teams involved!

East Afghanistan Out Now!

The next region of DCS: Afghanistan is now available: East Afghanistan! This new area leverages our latest map technology and lessons learned from previous terrains, including the Southwest region. The eastern region is characterised by its rugged, mountainous terrain, interspersed with agricultural areas around Bagram and along waterways. Kabul, the capital and largest city in Afghanistan, includes several points of interest such as hospitals, historical sites, monuments, and unique neighborhoods. The Eastern region also includes the urban areas of Bagram, Gardez, Jalalabad, and Khost and 10 highly-detailed airfields:

  • Bagram
  • Kabul
  • Jalalabad
  • Gardez
  • Khost
  • Sharana
  • Bamyan
  • Urgoon Heliport
  • Ghazni Heliport
  • Khost Heliport

Along with the release of the Eastern region, the entire map offers improved surface textures, ground clutter, noise, and normal maps. We have also upgraded the transition between ground texture types and increased the visual quality of surfaces throughout. In the months ahead, we will continue to enhance the map’s performance and visual fidelity, as well as improving AI pathfinding.

For carrier ops, the current update now expands to include the Arabian Gulf, albeit at a lower resolution. In parallel to continued improvement on the Southwest and Eastern regions, we now move our focus to North Afghanistan. New missions for DCS: Black Shark 3 and DCS: Flaming Cliffs 2024 have also been added for DCS: Afghanistan, enjoy!

Flexible purchase options provide customers the choice of purchasing one or more of three regions of Afghanistan: Southwest, East and North. You can purchase DCS: Southwest Afghanistan and DCS: East Afghanistan for $29.99 each. Alternatively, you may purchase the entire DCS: Afghanistan map for the early access discounted price of $55.99. This will include all current and future regions and updates.

Afghanistan Development progress

The Afghanistan map received extensive terrain mesh, normal maps, vegetation, ground texture, and other terrain improvements. In addition to Points of Interest (POI) areas around airfields and urban areas, the entire map has received a significant improvement in accuracy and realism, including from lower altitudes.

An important addition has been the inclusion of Forward Operating Bases Clark, Gardez, Thunder, Tellier, Camp Dubs, and Camp Julien. Additionally, the Patrol bases of Khost and Deysie combat outposts have also been added. These are now highlighted on the Mission Editor and F10 Map View with green triangles.

Other notable additions include the Mausoleum of Ahmad Shah Durrani, Kabul’s National Assembly, the Babur Garden, and the Kabul National Stadium. Many of the airbases also saw substantial improvement with more small and large object details, improved texture and lighting, and corrections to ramp and taxiway positions and AI logic. For a more detailed video report, please watch Matt “Wags” Wagner’s August 2025 Update video that discusses the update to the Afghanistan map and a dynamic campaign status report.
