GumidekCZ Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 Why AIM-7 cannot be guided anymore, after target relocked after loosing it for even just a second?
Tholozor Posted December 31, 2021 Posted December 31, 2021 (edited) The Sparrow guides off of a special pulse doppler illumination (PDI) mode that the radar enters and tunes the missile to when launched. If the contact is lost, PDI stops as the radar returns to search mode (not sure how the radar logic works in that regard to radar memory), and the missile no longer has anything to guide on. After requiring the contact, the radar will not automatically re-enter PDI. There have been times I've seen a track go into memory for split seconds and the missile able to reacquire before going into search, but your best bet for saving a lost shot is to use FLOOD mode and hope the missile picks it up. CBStu Posted January 1, 2022 Posted January 1, 2022 I have always had little success w/ AIM7s so I re-arm and grab some 120s.
