I managed to use most of the parts of a $70 Ebay handbrake plus a few extra washers. Has friction control. These handbrakes use a hall sensor, block magnet and an arduino running mmjoy2, so it pretty much ready to go for all parts needed. I've been using it for nearly 2 years and all is still good. The metal plate attached at the end is just a counterweight I was experimenting with, but I've found a  counterweight not really needed.

More recently added an old metal mop handle. Recycled the Z twist action of the grip to work as a throttle. Wooden dowel has the magnet mounted in the end and pivots with the PVC handle, connected via the long screw through the slot cut in the mop handle. Mop handle diameter happened to be exactly same as the grips twist insert which worked out nicely
