GunnDawg Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 So I am using the startup .pdf file that was posted here (forgot the name of the poster without going back and looking), and I get all the way to the point of firing up the engines. Then I have trouble. It says when the Left Engines RPM's get to 18% then turn the Left Cutoff Valve on. However I dont see my RPM's reaching anywhere near 18% before they die and quit starting up. Seeing as how the RPM gauge goes from 0 - 10 (x1000), I would assume that by 18% they mean 18,000 RPM's. The engine gets to about maybe 4,000 RPMs then quits... What am I doing wrong?
TimA Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 (edited) Hi GunnDawg, The engine RPM gauge is actually displayed in x10%, so you should find the RPM pretty quickly gets to 18% when you start turning over the engine. There's a needle for each turbine. Hope that helps. Edited December 22, 2008 by TimA
AlphaOneSix Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Yes, the needles are not in thousands of rpm, they are in tens of percents of rpm. So 18% would be just short of the "2" on the gauge. The "4" on the gauge is 40%. On my startup checklist, I emulate the way we start engines on the Mi-17, which is to say that as soon as the rpm needle jumps off the peg (i.e. starts moving), we open the cutoff lever.
GunnDawg Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 I suppose it will take some more practice then :)
crazysundog Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 where is your startup checklist Alpha, please and thankyou?!
AlphaOneSix Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Sorry about that, it's right here: http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=22187&d=1228354465 Note that it's not really polished like I would like it to be, and I should have an update coming out soon, like in a day or two.
Weta43 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 (edited) If you've turned on the pumps, (checked the governors,) opened the fuel shutoff valve, selected the engine, hit start then opened the red engine cut off lever at just below 20%, & the engine doesn't get beyond 20%, I'd say it sounds suspiciously like you haven't turned the rotor brake off... Edited December 22, 2008 by Weta43 Cheers.
nemises Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Actually, if the rotor brake is on, the engine will never fire at all! (guess its a physical override?) I know this, because I allways forget the rotor brake!, and am looking around swearing , checking the fuel pumps and cut-off valves, and cross feed valves and APU gauges...and its allways the damn rotor brake! :)

AlphaOneSix Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Having the rotor brake on electrically inhibits the start system. You can't start the engines with the rotor brake on.

Which is pretty much what the OP sounded like .. Cheers.
AlphaOneSix Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 No, if you have the rotor brake on, and you select an engine, and press the start button, nothing will happen. The engine should not spool up to 20%. If it does, something else is going on. Please provide a track and I'd be happy to have a look.
nemises Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 ^^ agreed and confirmed, if brake is on, engine starter does not spark at all..
Grodin Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 ^^ agreed and confirmed, if brake is on, engine starter does not spark at all.. Oh i mustve mixed it up with the cutoff then:music_whistling: Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.
therion_prime Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 You can turn on the fuel cutoff levers as soon as you press the start button. No need to wait until 18% RPM My DCS movies:
