Hi Guys,

Need some info please. I have looking up/reading the bits on how to Hover.

In the manual on the Hover section it states that the "ROUTE - DECSENT" switch needs to be in the neutral position, can anyone point use to where this switch is in the cockpit please ? I have looked all around and I can't see/find it. Timm

It is on the collective and you can't click with mouse on it. Map to joystick or use keyboard.

Hey Timm,

 

As the othe rtwo posts above explained, it is on the collective and non-clickable. I just wanted to give you a bit of further info. The keyboard shortcut "R" will turn "ROUTE FOLLOWING" on and off, alternatively. The keyboard shorcut "D" will engage the "DESCENT" momentarily, only as long as you hold it down, since that position of the switch is spring loaded to neutral.

 

So, to make this work, just look at the collective. If the switch is in ROUTE FOLLOWING mode (flipped forward), just hit R again and it will come back to NEUTRAL, which is where you need it to be for auto hover. DESCENT is visually checked as the switch flipped to the back of the cockpit but, again, it does not stay there if you are not holding down the D key on your keyboard.

Thanks alot for this. I never thought about looking on the Collective. I have found the switch and miguez thanks for your bit of extra info.

So correct me if I'm wrong but when in the hover and I lower my collective should the BS descend or should it stay in the hover until I de-select the Hover switch mode ? (L/ALT + T) The reason I am asking I have done as per instructions and find that if I lower my collective slightly I start to descend. Timm

As I understand it, your description matches what the real helo should do. That's because the autopilot system in most helicopters does not exclude pilot inputs, but adds them. So when you move your collective, the autopilot says "OK, I see you want less angle on those blades, you got it", and you'll start to descend. the same is true for the cyclic, if in autohover and you move the cyclic, the helicopter will obey and start to move away from a stationary hover.

 

Look at it as an aid, not an override.

If you press F key while in hover, autopilot will try to maintain altitude which has been designed by F key. It will do that by varying collective by itself in interval of 20%. If you move the collective to much, those 20% might be not enough and aircraft will begin climbing or descending. Basically you have to coarsely set collective to maintain hover and autopilot will continue doing that by fine adjustements of collective.

The real Ka-50 has a collective brake that performs two funtions: 1. It locks the position of the collective lever so that you cannot move it accidentally. You have to pull the handle before moving the collective. 2. When the autopilot's altitude hold channel is enabled (which it is when you are in hover hode), the autopilot tries to hold the assigned altitude. Pulling the collective brake sends a signal to the autopilot that you want to change your assigned altitude by moving the collective stick. Once you release the brake again the autopilot stores your new altitude as the assigned altitude and tries to hold it.

 

Now in the sim 2. is modeled but 1. isn't, so the autopilot will try to hold your assigned altitude, but since you can move the collective without pulling the collective brake you can counter it's control inputs, as ZaltysZ said. This would be impossible in the real aircraft. If you have the altitude hold channel enabled the correct procedure would be to press and hold the collective brake button as long as you are moving the collective/changing altitude.

Just a thought and maybe a little off topic!

Wouldn't it be possible to program the cougar in a "reverse" trim mode where you would have to press a button in order to engage the throttle axis?
