Wondering how exactly the racetrack orbit works. is it like i have drawn in the screenshot with the Highlighted tanker route? or something different? like the path line being in the middle of the actual route loop instead?

I remember in game It's like your red line, the airplane will orbit between the chosen waypoint and the next one with a left turn.

If you want an alterative to the standard orbit you can try using the switch waypoint command and manually set up a loop. It might not be as smooth as a true orbit though, which could be an issue with tankers.
