See attached track, helicopters will approach hill that is higher than their altitude. They will attempt to avoid crashing into the hill, but will fly through trees and lose a wing.

I've also seen the AI fly dangerously close to each other on occasion but I don't think this was captured in this track.

So looking at the track, and I opened it as a mission, you have a route set at 4000 feet MSL, but the route actually has some points where the terrain is over 4000 feet MSL. While the AI can avoid terrain its not possible right now to see every branch (as well as poles, etc). In order to do that, it would be a killer on FPS.

The better approach is to look at the route and use AGL if you are trying to get them to hug the terrain, and give the AI some more breathing room.

For some reason I didn't get notified of a reply to the thread. Thanks for the feedback. I actually made this mission to see if some advanced waypoint actions influence the AI's ability to avoid terrain. Does the AGL setting influence the AI's behavior when trying to dive below SAM radar?
