Lately I've been hopping back in forth between IL2 on Hyperlobby and DCS. Since I have the house to myself for a few weeks I've been using Teamspeak with IL2 and it has been an incredible boost in realism and excitement. I don't want to overstate it but it has changed an already great sim for me because it made cooperation possible. It felt so real hearing bombers cry for help and wingys call bandits that I've been damn near shaking when back on deck.

I had tried TS with LOMAC a few times but participation was low and the nature of the game didn't really make TS worth the time for me. DCS, as a co-op (at least for now) sim, would be a lot more fun with TS.

This thread, like the Campaign Generator thread, is completely self-serving--I want to have more fun in Multi-Player. The campaign generator may never happen. But Teamspeak and Ventrilo are here now and either makes MP worth showing up.

My two cents.

Check out Mumble, a free(as in speech and beer) alternative for teamspeak. Should have better sound quality and no artificial limitations. Havent tested it myself, as my friends are bit resistant for change :(

I even recall someone from ED saying that they considered integrating Mumble to DCS or something like that.

I would also like for people to use Mumble more. Personally I like it better than TeamSpeak or Ventrilo, but just as zokier, my friends are reluctant to change as well. One great thing I like about mumble that sets them over the competition (for me) is that you can overlay a small text-thingy on your screen showing who's talking (when there's a lot of people on the server you LOVE that feature).

Furthermore I can't belive why people don't talk in online games? Most games (read: all games imo!) benefit drastically from voice-communication. From small comments on getting shot down or helping friends out with vital intel is a blast.

Just my two cents about voice-communication in games =)

I use vent or teamspeak, it just depends on which of my friends are online. I did see that one host had you go to their vent server for the game server paswsword. I kinda like that. I think it would benefit you to join a squadron, most have their own voice server, and usually a ton of mates willing to help you out.

Team Speak DOES have that ability. There are a few communities using it in BS already. It's just a matter of the player doing some leg-work to find a group to fly with.

I'm all for integrating the VOIP in game though. I haven't found many game designers who've done it well though. The only one that comes to mind is World in Conflict.

It does? I can't find that feature. I use TSdisp for IL2 but that doesn't work for DirectX games.

Cool, I had no idea teamspeak could do that to =). A bit sad it's not in natively though.

In-game communication has potential to be really nice. For it to function really well I'd like to see a good user interface and tools to divide people into groups with hierarchy based voice-comm in between groups (team leader can talk to group leaders etc) and integrating it within the game brings added realism settings with signal blocking by terrain etc (would love this feature even though I reckon a lot of people would turn it off or go to teamspeak etc instead just to be able to talk all the time)

Edit: Regarding ingame voice with "simulation-features" one has to remember that all communication in multiplayer games are not of the simulation-kind, there are commonly problems with connections and other administrative tasks that need to be discussed as well. Somehow this must be possible anyway...

I am using TS and Mumble for a long time.

And I prefer: Mumble!

Reasons: speech-quality and less time-delay of transmissions.

So please server-admins:

Switch over to Mumble! :)

BTW: Have a look on the thread "Mumble integration in DCS"!

I like the idea to get the DCS-server-PW on the Mumble-server!

Much more pilots would start using Mumble when they are forced to do so that smart way.
