Alexrey Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Hey guys, I'm getting a new PC soon and was wondering how well it would run DCS. I read the recommended specs and a lot of my stuff just makes it into that list which kinda worries me. Here's what I'm getting: Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz CPU Radeon HD 4850 512MB GPU 4GB DDRII-800 RAM I'm trying to get the best "bang for buck" system I can find and this is what I came up with. Will I be able to get smooth framerates on high DCS graphics settings?
Boulund Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 (edited) I'd say that computer is one step up from mine, (Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 3.5GHz, 2 GB DDR2-1066, GeForce 8800GTS 640MB overclocked), and I'm getting around 60 FPS with everything but water and viewdistance set to maximum at 1680x1050 resolution. Hope this helps out =) edit: just thought I might guide you to this thread and invite you to use the search function to find more of the many similar threads discussing performance http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=36500 Edited January 16, 2009 by Boulund Core i5-760 @ 3.6Ghz, 4GB DDR3, Geforce GTX470, Samsung SATA HDD, Dell UH2311H 1920x1080, Saitek X52 Pro., FreeTrack homemade cap w/ LifeCam VX-1000, Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1. DTWD Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Personally I would re-grade the CPU to a Core 2 Quad Q6600. A simple overclock will give you 3GHz out of it, and then you can have four cores instead of two! Run the affinity trick (on Vista) and you will be getting 30+ fps pretty much across the board. There is the occasional stutter, and occasionaly the AI seems to have some sort of power leek that drops your FPS into the teens and below, but most of the time you won't drop below 25 at the lowest. Oh and for gods sake get Vista 64, not 32! Oh and I run everything on max apart from water I think (I may even do that) at 4xAA, 4xAF and 1920x1200 on pretty much that setup but with an overclocked 8800 GT, but as we know it's CPU NOT GPU that makes the big difference in this engine...at the moment. My expectation is that you'll be maintaining 40+ fps with everything but view distance set to high. I'm not sure if there's a machine in existence today that can maintain good fps with view distance set to high, but I'd be glad if someone would correct me. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
slug88 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Oh and for gods sake get Vista 64, not 32! Better yet, just get the Windows 7 beta for free, and then buy the release in August. I think buying Vista at this point would be a huge waste, when a massive improvement is on the horizon. I've been using Windows 7 since it's been available, and so far the sailing has been very smooth, even my X-Fi soundcard seems to be agreeing with the beta. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
DTWD Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 LOL yes there is that option, are there keys still available? Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
slug88 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 LOL yes there is that option, are there keys still available? AFAIK Microsoft has now opened the beta to unlimited enrollment; in other words, keys will be available for the foreseeable future. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
DTWD Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Oooooh...hmmm Did you upgrade from Vista or do a clean install? Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
slug88 Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 I'm running a dual boot system with XP 64 and Windows 7. The W7 was a clean install on a new partition. So far, I've had no need to load the XP partition. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
DTWD Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 Right, cheers...hmmm what to do. Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
CE_Mikemonster Posted January 16, 2009 Posted January 16, 2009 (edited) System seems fine, as has been said though, CPU not GPU. Whichever processor you get, buy a decent HS/F combo for it and overclock. On High settings, 1900x1200, my CPU usage is about 50/80%, and that's OC'd to 3.8GHz. (Dual Core) Also I run a 3850 and my framerates are 40-110 whenever I look (It's got choppy once or twice for a second, but that seems to be when a trigger is set off..?). So if you're on a budget a 4850 is possibly not worth the cost (but still desirable! :)). Edit: If you do get a Dual Core and overclock you will need faster memory - 800MHz will only allow you to OC to about 3.8-4.0GHz when you could be getting a fair amount more! If you get a quad core no such worries AFAIK Edited January 16, 2009 by CE_Mikemonster Too many cowboys. Not enough indians. GO APE SH*T
