With the exception of VF-17 and some CAG birds, you flew whatever plane was available. Some SQUADRONS didn't even have their own aircraft, and instead every group at a base drew from the same pool. Boyington is confirmed to have flown combat missions in three aircraft: 17883: 17740: (Interesting because of the extra national insignia on the underside of the left wing). And he was shot down flying 17915, though I'm not finding any photos of that bird offhand. 1 1
Nealius Posted Wednesday at 10:35 PM Posted Wednesday at 10:35 PM Was removal of the tank/bomb pylons a field modification or was that a different variant than our -1D?

These are 1As. They didn't have the knuckle pylons. It also gave about a 10mph advantage over the 1D with ADI and the paddle prop. 1
