When the F/A-18C got released several years ago, I got the impression from the early access manual that radio channels 1-20 are preset via mission editor and the only possibility to use any other frequency is via M channel, which the player/pilot can overwrite while playing.

With the release of UFC BU page I saw one can change the frequency for 1-20 channels right there, but to my horror I have discovered I can overwrite the frequencies also directly on the UFC.

So what is the point of having the M channel compared to overwriting e.g. channel 20?

1-20 are still preset for the mission, M allows for tactical flexibility, without compromising the mission channels

Aircraft radios are usually “channelised” for the mission/theatre/location. As an example, here is the recommend channels for ops out of Nellis & the NTTR, from the real world 57th Air Wing’s In-Flight-Guide.

As you can see, it is very easy to fill up 20 channels. The lower table contains additional frequencies that may or may not be needed, depending on the exact sortie to be flown. Instead of overwriting one of the stored frequencies, (which are usually the most commonly used) any “one off” frequency used can simply be dialled in using manual mode, leaving the channel frequencies the same every time.

OK, so it really is a convenience "Where did I put the ad-hoc freq" more than anything else (it could have been easily named channel 21).
Thanks!
