OpenXR Not Working

Bader242

Recommended Posts

Recently installed Open Composite and OpenXR Toolkit.  Works a treat in MSFS but I can't get the menu to pop-up in DCS.

DCS is listed as one of the recognised applications in the Toolkit and the blue box is ticked.  I've cleared all F2 and Ctrl keybindings in DCS just in case there was conflict in the background.  I followed the install guide, repaired DCS and so on but Ive clearly done something wrong but not sure what as it's working in MSFS.

I've searched historic postings but can't find any similar topics/experiences.

Any ideas? Hope you can help.  I have a Quest2, MSFS is Steam and DCS is non-Steam.

Did you also download the "per game installation" 64-bit DLL and place in the DCSWorld/bin folder?

If not, then go to quest-craft/Open-Composite (github.com)
Scroll down until you get to "Per game installation".  Download the 64bit version of the DLL.   Go into DCSWorld/bin folder and rename the existing "openvr_api.dll" to "openvr_api.dll_old"

Then copy the downloaded "openvr_api.dll" into the DCSWorld/bin folder.

The links there give a 404 for both 32 and 64 FYI

The *.xyz domain has been going up and down all day - just try another time.  Was working when I posted above.

Thank you for replying.  I did not do the above so will give it a try, though as DCoffey mentioned, the link is down at the moment.  I'll post results for community feedback.

Try this link instead - the download links appear to be working properly on this one:

Update:

No joy I'm afraid.  I've done the per game install but still can't get the OpenXR menu up within DCS.  I've changed the F2 key bind several times both with modifier and without to ensure there are no key mapping conflicts.

I have found a log file in the Open Composite folder which says:

[2023-01-20 20:54:12.204] Config::Config:207    - Checking for global config file...
[2023-01-20 20:54:12.205] wini_parse:172    - No config file found at E:\DCS World\bin\opencomposite.ini
[2023-01-20 20:54:12.205] Config::Config:226    - Checking for app specific config file...
[2023-01-20 20:54:12.205] wini_parse:172    - No config file found at E:\DCS World\bin\opencomposite.ini

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

For Quest 2 to work with OpenXR you have to launch DCS on SteamVR mode, just add --force_steam_VR at the end of the target of the DCS shorcut and make shure Oculus is the default enviroment for OpenXR (you can check on Oculus app > Settings > General

Is that the case even when I don't have the Steam version of DCS?

I am having the same issue...   Did a "Per game" install, works with Nightly, bt not OB or CB...    And, only OB is showing up in the toolkit...?   The addon in the target line didnt work for me...Came back with "Unknown command" error    Strange how it works in nightly...?

Here's the correct link:
Files · openxr · Campbell Suter (ZNix) / OpenComposite · GitLab

The 64bit per-game DLL should be the one used in DCS's bin folder.

Remember to run OpenComposite "As Administrator"

Key binding for OpenXR Toolkit menu is CTRL+F2

If you look in Users...AppData (hidden).. Local..  you'll find a OpenComposite folder.  Delete that - download the system wide version from the link above.  Copy Folder from zip onto Desktop, run exe as Adminstrator (right click.. run as), and it'll force opencomposite to redownload the system-wide DLLs again too.  Then switch to opencomposite.

Did all that ran as systemwide install as admin, still not working... IDK wtf...   Still working in nightly...not other versions

Update:

OpenXR is now working for me.  I launch a VR session via the Skate Zilla DCS Updater software.  Under App.Settings, select Rendering Driver as SteamVR API and then launch the VR session by clicking 'VR On' from the left side options.  This was after running the 'Per Game' install of Open Composite discussed above.

However, having now got OpenXR working at circa 52fps, I have to say I am now returning to my original set up without Open XR as explained in the link below.  I get 72fps with this method.

I had this problem (not sure if it's the same but may help someone) after every time I updated DCS. I noticed for some reason that the OC api file would go into the DCS bin folder but wouldn't overwrite anything. At the time I just assumed it must have gone in okay because I thought they were the exact same file. Turns out however that DCS was still locating the original and ignoring the needed open composite api file. So I deleted the (backed up) file and placed the open composite file in the bin folder manualy. It now works fine. So, at least in my case, I just had to make sure that the original DCS api file was removed. It not being wiped/overwritten may have something to do with it having a different file name after multiple downloads (it was openvr.api (6) at that point or something!).

open XR will not open when stuck on UI front screen I have no mouse control in UI; the keyboard not working with the UI with the Open XR try "cntrl+2" to open is not working.

Today's patch swapped DCS's standard runtime from SteamVR to OpenXR natively.  So, you need to make the following changes, which I just did one hour ago:

Run OpenComposite and set it to SteamVR mode.

Make sure that PimaxXR is also set to SteamVR.

Replace the Openvr_api.dll in DCSWorld/bin with the original one (is 585kb) if you did the 'per game' install of the 64bit DLL from OpenComposite.

Run DCS from Steam in SteamVR mode.

Once you reach the main menu, you can exit out again.

Don't bother touching OpenComposite again.

Go into "OpenXR Tools for Windows Mixed Media" and set the active runtime as WMR OpenVR runtime as default.

Go into PimaxXR Control Center (it'll throw up an error) and click "SteamVR" and then "PimaxXR" as the active runtime.

Go into DCSWorld/bin and create a shortcut for dcs.exe.   In the shortcut make sure that you add [yourdrive]*\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\DCSWorld\bin\DCS.exe --force_enable_VR as the target.  You can then add this shortcut to start/taskbar etc.
(Note: "[yourdrive]*" refers to the drive you installed SteamLibrary on.  For me that's F: but for you, that could be C:)

Get PiTool started up and the HMD turned on and tracking working.

Click on your new shortcut to launch DCS directly in Native OpenXR mode (avoiding the OpenComposite>SteamVR workaround)

One thing I forgot to mention.  If you have the Steam version of DCS,   If you reboot, you have to open Steam, and then close it again.  Otherwise DCS will not be able to authenticate causing a "essential files are corrupted" error.  Starting Steam once after any reboot will stop this happening.

In OpenXR Tool kit, also ensure that only "DCS" is selected down at the bottom, and nothing to do with "OpenComposite DCS" (for example) is selected.

Man, I'm sorry this is happening.  One man's treasure is another man's trash (as an inversion of the saying goes..)

I've been struggling for weeks with OpenXR/OpenComposite/PimaxXR being broken since the last update, along with the Options/VR menu crashing DCS to Desktop, even after OS reinstalls and building from scratch.  I was getting to the point that I was tempted to just set fire to everything DCS related and give it up as a bad life decision, and then today happened, and everything is fixed and better than ever.

..and now you've ended up on the wrong side of the coin.  I'm sorry for that.

If DCS is initializing in VR and loading to 100% (the menu, i'm guessing), then the only thing I can suggest apart from a "repair" is to rename your old SAVED GAMES/DCS directory to "old_DCS", and then restart DCS.  It'll rebuilt a virgin saved games folder, and you'll have to sign in again, but at least you'll be able to discount mods and shaders etc as being the issue..

Also, I don't know which version of PiTool you're running, but the official Pimax website has up to .277..  and then I found that they were posting updates on the OpenMR community.

Pitool 1.0.1.284v - PimaxVR Software / Release Notes - OpenMR | Community

(might help)

Also, check your PimaxXR and OpenXR toolkit versions to ensure they're up to date along with Nvidia drivers (as you're running a 3090Ti)
