deadsmell Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Ok guys, please dont flame me for not knowing this. I know the black shark has some limitations regarding right turns. Im just wondering what these limitations are, and what they are caused by. Is there a basic guideline for operational parameters in regard to right turns? Thanks. Dont let the smell get to ya...............
Yellonet Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Ok guys, please dont flame me for not knowing this. I know the black shark has some limitations regarding right turns. Im just wondering what these limitations are, and what they are caused by. The top and bottom rotors flex towards each other on the right side, they're pretty close together when you're going 200+ kph so if you pitch up or put in right rudder they get even closer, put in enough rudder/pitch and the blades intersect. Is there a basic guideline for operational parameters in regard to right turns?Just make very careful right hand or pitch up manoeuvres when going fast ;) 1 i7-2600k@4GHz, 8GB, R9 280X 3GB, SSD, HOTAS WH, Pro Flight Combat Pedals, TIR5
deadsmell Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 thanks Yellownet. Just for knowledge sake though, do you know why they flex closer to each other on the right than the left? Dont let the smell get to ya...............
eV1Te Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 (edited) Due to the fact that the top rotors rotate clockwise and bottom anti clockwise. The right side of the top rotor rotates against the flying direction therefore have less lift and less flex, for the bottom rotor it's the opposite and the right side flexes up and meets the top rotor on the right side. When one give right rudder inputs the bottom rotor receives a higher pitch angle and top rotor less pitch and therefore gives torque to the helicopter to turn right, at the same time higher pitch to the lower rotor makes it flex more and less pitch to the top makes it flex less. deadsmell Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 weird. Dont let the smell get to ya...............
Zembla Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 weird. Why is that weird? -Z [sigpic][/sigpic] I aaaaaam ... a banana!
Sunjah Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Hmm, I think that would explain why I've had my blades pop off when I started "fighting" the Auto-Pilot. I never realized right turns were sort of hurting me trying to regain control. Glad that I know now, thanks! Is that also why, when you turn off the AP-Heading, the chopper pulls to the right? Remember, on Nov. 4th, vote for Black Shark for President!!!
deadsmell Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 (edited) Why is that weird? -Z I have just been having a hard time wrapping my head around this concept for the last few days, thats why I started the thread. I didnt mean anything derogatory by saying "weird". I just think that it is weird. I just get curious, why do they flex more on the right? even after the explanation, I still have trouble with it. I can accept that thats just the way it performs, but it still boggles me a bit. I guess I just like to know the science behind how something works, or why it does what it does. sunjah, its funny you say that, i often feel like the chopper is pulling LEFT. ArchAngel Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Just make left turns, eventually you'll go right. Kidding. 1 An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.
deadsmell Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 lol, yeah your no that far off actually, there was one day, where I did only make left turns because I was having some severe issues with rights. Dont let the smell get to ya...............

Think of it as the helicopter is moving forward the blades on one side moves into the wind and on the other side with the wind. This is of course reversed on the other rotor and there fore they flex up at different sides, so on one side they flex apart from each other and the other side they flex towards each other. 1
Tango Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Hi, If you do need to make sharp manouvers at speed, drop the collective, and then smoothly apply the required inputs. If you try and roll left/yaw right at speed with lots of collective, you're going to end up having a REALLY bad day. ;) Best regards, Tango. 1

I think I have a pretty good grasp now. I don't know why I couldn't conceive it. Thanks again to everyone for all the responses. Rep inbound! Dont let the smell get to ya...............
