Another way of stating it: The PVI-800 must be blank, completely "lights out". Any light that is on, push it to make it go out. Now each time you trim, your current track will be the reference track the autopilot will attempt to maintain.

My DCS wish list: Su25, Su30, Mi24, AH1, F/A-18C, Afghanistan ...and frankly, the flight sim world should stop at 1995.

That's not entirely true. The autopilot will follow a heading if the DH-M-DT switch is set the the central "manual" position. Every time the trim button is released the current is captured and set to the heading-to-be-followed by the autopilot. This is true even if WPT (or NAV/TGT, AIRFIELD, etc) mode on the PVI is active.

You can also use "autopilot without task" like eric describes.

The autopilot isn't what's following the heading. When you trim, your heading hold channel will make a reasonable attempt to hold your heading. For example, if you trim to a new heading, but have a slight bank, you will gradually drift in a turn, but if you hit the route mode switch "R" it will stabilize (get rid of your bank) without further control input and hold your heading (assuming your PVI-800 has nothing selected).

A16, you do state the textbook "autopilot without task" method however I'm pretty sure the autopilot will hold a heading just a fervently in the middle position on the DH-DT switch my way as your way. There's a diamond on the heading tape with ROUTE mode engaged and everything.

But honestly I have no concrete knowledge of what the middle positions of the DH-x-DT and BR-x-RD switches do since the manual completely ignores the fact that they are 3-position switches and not 2-position!
