Hi,

I was looking at buying this online but noticed a few posts stating it is only stereo in XP and I am an XP user, is this correct and is it being addressed ? I had wallet out ready to go but this 'issue' is a no go for me as I do enjoy stereo games when I have a nice 5.1 surround system.

Cheers,

Um, didn't you just answer your own question?

It is the best simulator made, to-date, that is available to the public.

Remember, on Nov. 4th, vote for Black Shark for President!!!

To be honest, I am not sure if this sim is for you. This is a hardcore simulation made for a fairly small niche of people. By and large these folks (myself included) don't care much about sound, graphics, fancy interfaces etc, even though Black Shark does pretty well on all those fronts. We have been waiting over 10 years for a simulation of Black Shark's caliber, and little sound or graphics quirks are non-issues as far as I am concerned. While it would be nice to have 5.1 surround (I guess), I would far rather the developers spend time modeling additional switches in the cockpit or working on the A-10 module. Basically, if the lack of 5.1 surround is a deal killer for you on a sim of this quality, then I don't believe you are in the target audience for this sim.

5.1 although nice isn't the be all and end all in games. Certain games it adds an advantage, others it's negligable at best.

You don't need 5.1 for this game, but it will sound better than just out of stereo on your system (the .1 still works after all).

Just buy the game, worrying about such a thing is like not buying a game that is so brilliant in so many ways as you find it only does stereo and it doesn't really matter...oh wait :D

Then again you could argue that merely asking if this game is for you means it's not.

Sounds like it's no go for you...

Ok, so I take it its not being worked into a patch or fix, thanks for your vote against buying it.

Typo, but thanks for pointing that out and your opinion of this game but missing my question.

Why add 'game' mode ? Fair enough, thanks for the vote against.

Most constructive answer thanks, my question was around sound in the game and your points are valid (apart from the final line ;) ), I was borderline purchasing, I already own Lock-On and Flaming Cliffs but it seems there is more against the casual sim than for, so thank you all for your replies. Lets hope other folk who enjoy an array of sound / gfx / sim can find some use in this thread as I have done.

I am not really sure why they added a game mode. If all you want is the game mode, then I am sure there are other far prettier and better souding games out there that will do that job better. My point is that your question is a bit like saying its a deal killer to be missing a cupholder in a Ferrari. Ferraris are designed for a certain type of driving enthusiasts for whom cupholders are not really considered that important. If a cupholder is really that important to you, you are probably better off with a different type of car.

On the other hand, if you can get yourself to look past the cupholder, and enjoy the car for what its meant to be, you will get a driving experience like no other. The same applies with Black Shark. I wish you luck in whatever sim you end up in.

Well, if you do own FlamingCliffs and enjoy the game, the sound and the difficulty setting, I see no reason why to not get BlackShark. :dunno:

It is the same engine, but with better sound. Not optimized for 5.1, but as long as you don't use onboard chip with 5.1 hardware, you'll benefit from it anyway. With the software that comes with most audio-accellerator-cards, you will benefit from your hardware, no matter if the game supports it or not. And, be honest, how many games do you have that are built for 5.1?

Secondly, you can adjust difficulty settings as you wish. If you want to play it á la LockOn, there is no problem with that. You don't need to learn the full start-up procedure to have fun with the game. Another quick way to have fun with the game is the arcade-style game-mode. It can be fun, though it's rather looked down at from the hardcore-simmers lurking around here. They just play it when nobody watches.

Apart from that, buying BlackShark you will support the crew that will deliver you the new graphics- and sound-engine, so it's in your own hand to see the game improved or not. :smilewink:

Wow, gee, thanks guys.

Why game mode was added: For the casual players.

Yep, DCS aims to capture part of that market if possible.

If you enjoy game mode, play with game mode. If you want to fly the most realistic entertainment combat flight sim of a helicopter, play this game.

The sound engine will be updated sometime in the future, but when is at this time un-known.

EDIT: i just saw your last post at R3D.....aw come on, you just had a bumpy start here, some of the guys around here can be abrasive but they mean well ;)

Hehe, good luck with that. I would think BS would have a hard time competing with Ace Combat and the like, especially since it isnt on consoles. But good on you for trying...

Hi, Thr0tt and welcome trust me if i tell you that 5.1 sound will be forgotten once you buy the Sim - game.

I also have a 5.1 surround system and have not given it a second thought and chances are you may never remain on XP for ever. :joystick:

CGTharos,

No one is chasing customers away. OP asked a simple question. He asked whether the sound was 5.1 in XP, and said that this was a deal-killer for him. The sound is not 5.1 in XP, so on its face, the OP was definitive that he was not a customer.

I, and almost everyone else in the thread, pointed out that the lack of sound is a very minor problem relative to the rest of the game, in order to try and convince him to reconsider his view that 5.1 surround is a deal-killer. The fact that almost everyone in the thread, including me, voluntarily has stood up to say how fantastic the sim is should send a pretty clear message to you about how loyal ED's fans are, and how much goodwill towards the company and the product we have.

Goodwill will only go so far, however. Even if I had "chased customers away", I am not on ED's payroll, and AFAIK, there is no forum rule that requires me to advertise the product. I do not believe that the purpose of this forum is to force me to try and sell the sim to anyone and everyone, regardless of whether I believe it is suitable for their needs. My understanding is that the forum is a place for users to express their own opinions, within the limits described in the forum rules, not necessarily the views of ED. I would have thought that Forum Rule 1.10 implicitly supports my position. If, however, I have misunderstood the purpose of the forum or misunderstood the rules, please feel free to let me know or ban me, and I will not post here in future.

ThrOtt, You can take advantage of your 5.1 in the sim by utilizing some of your soundcards software to give it a simulated surround sound. Not true 5.1 but more atmosphere then just stereo.

Being your simulating being in a helicopter with headphones on, there's really not that much real advantage of having full 5.1 sound anyways, so I wouldn't base you choice on that too much.

If you buy the sim, all of us that love it would appreciate it, because we want this sim to be as successfull as possible to help ensure future developement.

Please forgive the sarcasm, but opting out of this sim due to lack of 5.1 (I wouldn't know, I have a standard 2.1 of satellites and woofer and LOVE the audio) strikes me as kinda like opting out of a proper filét because it doesn't come with sprinkles of gold leaf...

Aside from that, if a person is on the arcadey style of air combat gaming and enjoyed Lock On enough to get Flaming Cliffs and like it, Black Shark offer so many levels of customization of realism versus "gameplay" that rejecting it for lack of audiophile sound rigging is a bit like buying a record from some dude that won Idol. Mega production value != good. Good == good.

thrOtt,

Like some of the other posters have said already, tweek your s.card driver/software to enhance the sound and/or wear a headset (usefull for going online).

I would pay little attention to the detremental posts on this thread, some people dont get let out much and dont apreciate that if you dont sell your product to the widest range of people you greatly reduce the chances of "cashing in" which inturn slows/harms future developments.

However, this is one hell of a sim and you will definately be missing out regardless of what skill level you choose to play on be it simulation or arcade mode. C'mon blowing up tanks is alot of fun:smilewink:

thrOtt,

I am going to have to disagree with these upscaling people. I wouldn't alter your sound card to upmix anything. It's effectivly getting something from nothing so although it might "sound better" it is in fact overtly faked.

The only thing that I might switch on is cloning your rears from your fronts, other than that do nothing. I would probably not even do that. Playing as the devs intended is usually the best way forward.

Well thats just my take on it anyway.

Have you got it yet?

Regards
