BammBamm Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 Could somebody please watch the attached track and educate me on what I am doing wrong here? This is one of the training lessons, so it's really hard to screw it up, but apparently I have done so. All I've done is select AA mode and fly. Radar is on and working, Master Arm is on and it's also not in quiet or silent. It never once picks up the SU-27. Thank you, Lesson 12 - AIM-120 BC Air-Air Missles.miz_20032023_09-37.trk
Solution razo+r Posted March 20, 2023 Solution Posted March 20, 2023 The Su-27 is at 24'000ft, but you have set up your radar in such a way that at 40NM, it scans from +22'000ft to -25'000ft. So the Su-27 is outside the radar coverage (at least at the beginning). So use the antenna elevation control to correctly adjust the radar elevation. 1
BammBamm Posted March 20, 2023 Author Posted March 20, 2023 (edited) EDIT: Disregard. You're 100% right. After understanding the radar functions better, it seems to be working now that I have it adjusted correctly. 1 bar and middle azimuth with a tighter elevation was the trick for that distance. Thanks and sorry for the unnecessary post. Edited March 20, 2023 by BammBamm 1
Chain_1 Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 razo+r is correct, you were looking too low with the radar. A fighter's radar isn't an all seeing eye, for want of a better term, it can only see in a cone. It won't detect anything outside that cone. This tool (https://tawdcs.org/radar-f15/) was made using the F-15's radar, but the principles are the same. Use it to practice locking contacts, and that will help your understanding of the system.
BammBamm Posted March 21, 2023 Author Posted March 21, 2023 Awesome, thanks guys! I appreciate the help. 1
FlippingGerman Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 If you want more detail, watch this. This is a Hornet video, but the principles of how radar works is exactly the same, the interface just looks a little different:
