Ukrainian biker Elena got took a ride through Chernobyl few years ago. She had Geiger counter and camera ready!

There are 2 documentaries, "Ghost Town" and "Land of the wolves". I suggest reading both of them, it's a pretty good reading and it really made me think of the past, back to that particular period of my youth!

I posted links to Elena's documentaries simply because I liked them!

I have read a few stories of trips like this and this one was pretty good. I like her comments.

It's very sad what happened (the catastrophe itself and the aftermath) but the area fascinates me, the emptiness and silence, it's got to be surreal. I hope I can visit it some time (maybe when I'm done studying and have more time).

Thanks for sharing!

http://www.pixelpress.org/chernobyl/ If you're intrested in Chernobyl google "the elephant's foot" it's a mixture of molten glass and Urainium fuel rods from the RBMK reactor and it scares the sh*t out of Russian scientists. Most people think Chernobyl is the most irradiated enviroment on Earth which is false. Chelyabinsk near the southern Ural mountains at a place called Mayak chemical combine which has enough radiation contamination to poison every square foot of Russia. http://www.american.edu/ted/URAL.HTM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR1wo5s3Ua4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxus4XLLl0A&feature=related Edited by Vault

I remember seeing pics of that girl on her bike a few years back, she is nice :) It is a real shame what happened at chernobyl, thousands of people uprooted from where they had lived for generations, maybe someday a full cleanup of the site if it is possible can commence and allow them back onto their land.

Also the fallout landed all over europe and the Uk and to this day the UK still has to pay farmers for animals that he breeds that are automatically killed because they are too dangerous to enter the food chain thus saving the farmers livelihood.

I remember when it happend like others here, I was only about 15 or so and it was a real scary time to be living in, as someone said, the Uk suffered something similar, the only thing that stopped the UK from being contaminated was the introduction of filters, now the person who was in charge of building windscale aka sellafield said originally those filters werent planned to be installed and he had to fight to get them installed which took a long time and was seen as a thing that wouldnt be needed, if he lost we would have a similar patch of ground that would in all probability be a wasteland also, but then again saying that, real estate in the uk is a high commodity so it would probably of been cleaned up by now regardless of the cost ???

I just hope that when the decommisioning of the chernobyl plant starts and they build that huge decommisioning shelter over the plant that I hope they also start to cleanup the surrounding area so that maybe 50 years down the line or less those people that were uprooted or even the kids of those people can return to where they originally came from if they so wish.

Mayak Chemical Combine, lake Karachay and the Techa river are far more of a clean up priority than Chernobyl. So are the 15 nuclear reactors dumped in the northern sea's of Russia three of which are still loaded with plutonium and uranium fuel rods include the 10+ containers of nuclear fuel rods also dumped at sea.

Mayak chemical combine is contaminated with 2,400,000,000 curies of radiation, Chernobyl is contaminated with just 50,000,000 curies of radiation. Mayak CC is over 200 times more polluted than Chernobyl.

The elephants foot and all the rest of the melted core of the reactor which seeped into crevices below where the reactor was and hardened into weird shapes, all of it has now started to breakdown and become full of holes and is turning to dust.

I saw a programme not long ago about when they first found the elephants foot back in the 80s and what it looks like now, it looks nothing what it originally looked like due to water I think which is causing it to turn into a sponge type material which is full of holes and decaying the original material, they say that when it was all moulded together originally it wasnt so bad nor dangerous to anyone except those close to it but now with it breaking up and turning to dust it is now extremely dangerous as it can get airborne since its breaking down into dust and also can go into the water table below.

I am not 100% sure of what the situation is like I am just remembering what that programme of chernobyl today said.

Its a pity as Russia is a beautiful country as is most of Europe, its just sad that alot of it seems to be contaminated due to work that went on during the cold war.

I read these things a few years back. I still think about them from time to time. Thank you for retrieving them so I can read them again.

Haha, if you go to that livejournal site and scroll down, one of the pictures near the bottom is of a military vehicle with a tower on it. Above it, the caption reads: Есть предположения, для чего эта штука с трубой?

Translated: Does anyone have any idea what this joke with a tube is for?
