Hi people, wondered if any of you could comment on expected frame rates in the game, my PC is no sloutch, ( see spec in my sig) but with settings on high, I am only getting about 20fps in the cockpit, less over a town.

I was a bit suprised at this, as the engine and textures are essentially lomac, and should not be too demanding for a fast machine like mine.

Cheers, Mark

As you are using Vista, if you aren't already, use an affinity utility such as Wombat's DSCAFF to make better use of your quad processor. Also set your option to use fullscreen. There are several threads in this forum on getting the best out of one's system.

What graphics card do you use? If your using a lower end gfx card you will get performance loss from some of the graphics options when set to High, even thought BS is heavily CPU dependant.

If you are on Vista do what Bonkers said, if you haven't used it yet you could be looking at 35-40 fps.

Also, what is your screen res and are you using any AntiAliasing etc?

Hi guys, have editted my sig to include the graphics card - d'oh!!... I have set the option to fullscreen, I use 1920 x 1200 and use 2x antialiasing and applicatyion controlled anisotropic filtering. Will do a quick search for Wombats dscaFF.. Thanks...

Depending on level of success with the affinity tweak I would suspect somewhere between 30 and 50 FPS in moderate congestion. Thing with DCS:BS is that it is very CPU-intensive so I do suspect that your GPU (like my 9800GTX+) will be relatively idle wherease one of your CPU cores will max out and be your bottlenecks UNLESS you manage to get it tweaked to use multiples.

But that said, the game does offer 20ish on my 2GHz dualcore laptop with 2 gigs of DDR2 CL5 333MHz RAM and a GeForce 8600m. Your machine obviously slaughters my laptop (and my main rig too for that matter :P ), so your game should be smooth with the one small caveat that you might end up using your CPU inefficiently. Though still better than that mobile 2GHz dual...

A few things.

You have a good spec but 2gb RAM is a little low with Vista although fine in XP. I would up it to 4gb if funds are available. This may not, of course, be why you are having a low frame rate issue.

I would suggest checking for any services taking significant CPU time and remove any you don't need.

If you have wingmen this, for me at least, has quite an impact on performance and I have a similar system spec QX9650, 8gb, Nvidia 280 Vista 64bit Ultimate etc..

To check that the problem isn't graphics related try dropping the resolution to say 1280x1024 with no AA and see if you get any dramatic FPS improvement.

EDIT

As EtherealN mentions the affinity trick makes a big difference. I can easily see it make the difference on my system when it kicks in after 30 seconds or so.

The limiter for you is most probably the CPU, so you can easily up the GF to 16x AA and 16x AF without any reduction in FPS.

Also reducing some GFX options in the game does increase FPS for me (probably they are more CPU demanding than GPU demanding) for example, Water to normal, Shadows to Active Planar.
