This is a bit of necro here, but: if you look really close you can see that the Berkut had it's Canards and stabilizers in a position to press the front wheel to the ground - the same method that the Gripen uses for it's short-field capability.

 

So my guess would be that it uses something similar to nose-wheel compression to set off a "braking mode" where it can use it's ordinary control surfaces as a nice airbrake.

 

I'm not sure if it has an airbrake at all, watch the 30 seconds of this video:

 

 

As the berkut is rolling along after touchdown, you see the airbrakes raised on the other 2 Su's, but not on the Berkut.

 

Maybe only brake chute/wheelbrakes are used?

Сомнительное качество.

Вопрос: зачем он нужен? На него даже вооружение никогда не вещали, не говоря о боевом применении.
