HawkEXO Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 (edited) I'm familiar with GBU usage in more modern aircraft, but not older jets without a targeting pod. How do I use them in the Mirage F1? Looks like laser code is defaulted to 1688 on the bombs unless changed in mission editor, so I guess I have that part figured out. How do I know when/where to drop? Do I just dive on the target and guess? Generally, I just have no idea how to approach the task without guidance provided from avionics in more modern aircraft. I know how to drop dumb bombs. I guess I should set the sight depression and fly the drop angle similarly to dumb bombs? If so, what are good settings for the drop? Forgive me if this is in the manual. I could not find it. Would be happy to reference there if anyone can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. Edited August 13, 2023 by HawkEXO
gnomechild Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 Basically with LGBs in jets like the F1 or F-5 you have to fly a rough profile like you would with unguided bombs. Obviously you get a lot more leeway with LGBs. My advice is to setup a mission with infinite ammo and a pair of Mk83s. Fly up to whatever alt you'd like to drop from. Probably fairly high since you'll have LGBs. Dive around 15 degrees and when you're at the release alt you want hit active pause. Once you're frozen, drop the bombs. When you see an explosion, move the pipper down onto the fireball and write that down. 1
HawkEXO Posted August 13, 2023 Author Posted August 13, 2023 Suppose a guy didn't have visual on the target. What would he use for guidance? INS? I've seen videos of guys lofting them. Like this one. Tacview at 4:15. https://youtu.be/kP6L_JxZkNE

May be, there are you need a Google translate to work with it. With this script you can lase any aim and destroy it with GBU as on video!
grim_reaper68 Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Hi I've made a GBU bombing mission with the F1. For the guidance, you can use additional vector. For example, my target is at 299°/56nm from senaki (tac 31X), just set up the bearing and distance on the IDN, and the tacan of course. Then use the RNAV-VA . I release the GBU at 12000 with a light diving at 6-8 nm from the target, it works fine. I'm using the Predator drone with autolase. Also tested with JTAC on the ground, which works too, but you have to make all the radio stuff before it lase the target. You can also use a waypoint (then use NAV-N)or the waypoint offset (NAV-VA), to find your target. 3
