Issue reported. I think the cargo should simply detach when hitting a ship on the side.

Agree with detach cargo when hitting a ship on the side. But thats not enought. See my second track.

I put cargo easy on the Tanker board and then sliding it. No need to "open" the ship from the side. I can easily destroy even the aircraft carrier George Washington with 1000lbs barrels.
