Hey guys, Happy New Year,

I am still new to DCS, a couple of months only, and I was wondering which user files are safe and which may cause issues with the base game.

SAFE: campaigns, missions, skins?

UNSAFE: mods?

Can you advise me, please?

Thanks and I wish you a great 2024

All mods can make DCS crash, but, generally they work fine. First, mods wich go in Saved Games are easy to install/uninstall quickly (erase) when problem. Mods that go into DCS core should be installed with care, as DCS may become unstable or crash. The best way is to check the forum to see if there are any problems. The best solution for managing mods is to use a mod manager, which allows you to install/uninstall everything securely (for example OvGME). Mods that go into DCS must be uninstalled at each update and then reinstalled. Some mods will prevent multi-flight because they don't pass Integrity Check (IC), but the mod manager allows you to uninstall them in one click. You'll find all the information you need on the modding forum. Fly Safe.

Yes, those are safe in the sense that they usually don't affect the workings of DCS, but the older files may have compatibility issues when used with the current version of DCS. For example, the earliest skins for the C-101 are no longer compatible with the current aircraft.

These files should be saved at:

Single Missions: go into C:\Users\your-user\Saved Games\DCS.OpenBeta or DCS World\Missions\

Campaigns: go into C:\Users\your-user\Saved Games\DCS.OpenBeta or DCS World\Missions\Campaigns\en\

Skins should go into C:\Users\your user\Saved Games\DCS.OpenBeta or DCS World\Liveries\unit-type-code\

The unit-type-code is usually given on the skin description or install instructions. This pic shows some of the type codes that I've used:

Mods are not usually unsafe when used alone, but if you use many user Mods at the same time then there is a chance that they may conflict with each other. Also, if DCS is updated while the User Mod is kept "as is", there is a chance that it may now be incompatible with the new version of DCS.
