Hi,

i am experiencing a rendering bug with mountains. i managed to make some screenshots to illustrate it:

gfxbug1.jpg

gfxbug2.jpg

As you can see, there is a horitonal split in the shading of the mountain.

it is not static, it moves around - sometimes slower and sometimes very fast. also the tightness changes. for example sometimes there are 5 or 6 very close and less wide stripes. it also changes very quickly.

i use the geforce 8800 gts with latest drivers.

additional, if have some bugs of similar kind with water, hower i did not manage to get a screenshot of that to illustrate. it kinda flashes sometimes and the clouds get closer to the ground for a split second. dont really know how to descibe it accuratly.

any ideas ?

thanks.

This looks to be a graphics card driver issue you have. I would lay my hands on some other versions of the drivers and try them out. Though you may trade one "problem" for another with the change of drivers.

well, i had the issue before i installed the latest driver. i then installed the latest driver in hope it would solve the issue, but it didnt.

Which drivers are you using. A new set came out on the 3rd I believe. 182.50 or something like that.

I've had this problem as well on two computers, one with an ATI card (mine) and the other an Nvidia card. I've tried 'sampling' ATI drivers from 7.11 to 9.3, changed every setting (AF, AA, Catalyst AI) and reinstalled to no avail. On my other computer (my brother's), it does the same thing, except it's an Nvidia card which is fairly new. As it's my brother's computer, I can't go to town with testing drivers and such, though I can certainly say that his BS install is truly a fresh install.

It is hard to explain, except to say it's an 'accordion' like distortion which varies based on turning away from a level horizon, and as such everything looks fine in the exterior views as they are all flat to the horizon. I've had this problem in Lock On as well, though in some ways it seemed less severe, or flat-out apparent.

Also, it is a factor of distance, as it effects terrain at a certain distance out. It's most obvious in cases of when planes drop night illumination flares (or rather, the effect of the circle of light on the terrain).

At first I assumed it was an issue of textures and anisotropy at distance, but that didn't change anything. I then messed with the settings in the graphics.cfg regarding light clipping and landscape 'far' clipping, but that didn't change it either.

The only 'solution', which really isn't, is to go into options.lua and switch haze to 0 ('basic'). It removes the problem, since it removes all the shaders and lighting involved. I suspect they removed the 'basic/advanced' setting back from LOMAC because the fog looks absolutely horrid, like an nearly opaque 'blanket' of 'table fog' even at the lowest fog setting. Also, the night lighting effect from illumination flares is simply gone, leaving only the light cast onto the objects themselves rather than the landscape.

Unfortunately, I over-compressed the screenshot which had an example of the night lighting, but the effect is similar. It is a factor of distance, as once I get close enough, the 'shimmering accordion' effect disappears.

I haven't posted images on a bulletin board system before, so hopefully these will go through. They have compression artifacts, but the point is hopefully seen.

What you are seeing are the shadows from clouds on the ground. It's the same for me in Lock On and in BS. For the 3 different nvidia cards I have used I always have seen it. I use a mod for LO and BS that removes the cloud shadows. Better none then seeing this when low. Search lockonfiles.com and you should find the mods.

It's unfortunate that the developers could not get the cloud shadows to work properly.

Its been there since LockOn 1.00, and doesnt look like its going away until ED creates the new dx9 engine, and Im referring to the shaded mountains.

I may need your assistance in finding that mod. I looked in both the DCS and LOMAC sections on lomacfiles.com and found many cloud mods, but none whose description saying it also removed the shadows.

It's good to know that there's a definitive cause. I guess I never added two and two together when I was going nuts with the visual settings trying to pin it down. (Alas, many wasted hours trying everything under the sun to figure out what caused that.) I did try a night mission with no clouds and still got those odd artifacts from illumination flares, but I can happily live with that as long as I can get rid of those distortions during the day.

Hi Strekaya,

The Lock On no cloud mod was made by Teka Teka and I can't find it at Lockonfiles either. I do have it as well as other mods by Teka Teka at the 169th site here.

For BS there was no released mod but someone on these forums, (sorry forget the name) provided the attached file CLOUDSHADOW.TGA.dds. You must extract the file then manually insert the file into \Bazar\Terrain\Surface\LandTexturesTGA.cdds using ModMan's CDDS Explorer.

CLOUDSHADOW.TGA.rar

ok,

i tried to insert the file with the cdds explorer, but now the game doesnt launch anymore.

can u upload your LandTexturesTGA File with the new texture allready included ?

thanks.

Allright, i got it fixed now.

Mountains are now ok / without artifacts.

However, it didnt solve the flickering of the cloud shadows over water. is there a fix for that aswell ?

thanks.

hi,

allready had them on all planar.

also tried active planar, didnt make a difference.

with "shadows" i mean "relections" btw. - the reflections of the clouds on the water are flickering.

I got a chance to try it and it works! Many thanks Crunch, it's nice to be able to finally resolve that problem for the better part of two months. I learned a bit about other things along the way, but my only regret was not asking sooner, assuming the problem was something localized to my computer only.

If on ATI card the flickering of the cloud shadow over water is graphics driver issue... I had it on few later drivers (I use ATI card also) and Catalyst 8.12 does not give me this issue (I run water on high and there is no flickering over water)

EDIT: oops sorry this is for DCS. Can't confirm for DCS because I always run it with water on Medium but for LockOn it works fine on High. I guess if water is same in LockOn and DCS it should be fine in DCS also so give it a go.

SAME PROBLEM HERE:

Getting strange graphical glitch: Black moving vertical lines on terrain when viewed from inside pit only. THey seem to be related to the rotor movement as they get better but do not totally go away as the blades slow and eventually stop (shown below).

I'm running VISTA 64 and have an ATI 4750 card.

No matter what seetings in game I choose everything maxed or lowered I can't seem to get them to go away.

These screen were taken on the default Instant Action Mission on the US DvD release game.
