NismoRR Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 First off, I promise, I searched first! Got BS installed yesterday and it's fantastic. I'm in awe really, mostly watching training vids but I did take control, did a few circuits, and landed a few times. Nice. When I hit ESC at the end of a mission and then quit, I get the "BS not working" popup in Vista 64. It will then say looking for solution and then again BS not working. BS is somewhat funky in how it loads a mission; changes from the main menu, to Windows desktop, to the load mission screen, back to desktop, load mission screen, then you get into the game. Anyway, after hitting escape and then quit, it goes to the desktop and I get the message. When I hit OK, the BS main menu comes back up as if everything was fine. It's an inconvenience now, but when I'm doing real missions, I wonder if this continues, would I lose all the mission data. Or better, I'd like to have this fixed so as not to get the "Not working" message. Thanks guys! Off to get the startup procedures down. Todd
EtherealN Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 First off, this would have been best placed in the problems sections. ;) Anyway, the reason why it is a bit "funky" when loading missions is that it actually switches between executables. It's launcher.exe for the menus, and DCS.exe for the game itself. When you load a mission launcher.exe prepares the files and settings and then calls for DCS.exe to start. When the mission is over, DCS.exe quits and loads up launcher.exe again. To further diagnose the actual problem, it would be nice to know what system you have. Graphics card, ram type and amount, driver versions and so on. Without those it might be difficult to figure out what might be happening. NismoRR Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 You're right Ethereal, I realized that after it was posted. Actually, the message I get is "DCS has stopped working" not Black Shark has stopped, which makes sense from what you said. The system: i7 920@2.67 GTX 285 driver 181.22 (seems best for my system) 6 GB Tri-channel memory (OCZ Gold 8-8-8-24) HT Striker 7.1 sound card Vista 64 I have not tried the Vista affinity trick yet. Thanks for your help!
NismoRR Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 When you installed Black Shark, did you allow it to Install DirectX? No Dusty, I did not. I have the most recent DX10 for Vista, and the game runs great. When I installed FSX recently, it automatically installed DirectX 9.0c and screwed some things up. I then re-installed the latest DirectX version. I was glad BS gave the option not to install it, as my version, I thought, should be fine.
Zakk Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 (edited) You could always delete this post and then start a new one under "Problems and Bugs" for more HELP. I use Vista64 and had funky issues that could NOT be ironed out, and had to eventually FORMAT a new partition and REINSTALL V64--All is GOOD now! Skydoc Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I have started seeing this more often as well (running vista64) and it seems to be related to longer mission duration. Could the code have some kind of "memory leak"? . Skydoc, out! NismoRR Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 I don't know about memory leak, but I can say that the "missions" I'm doing are pretty short. I just got BS yesterday and doing the training vids. I might take control to do a circuit or two and some takeoff/landings just to get a feel for this thing. No matter what, when I quit out of a trainig video, I get "DCS Not Working."
nachomaga Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Vista 64 Basic here and no problem at all. Only once, at the end of a mission an error message appears (No DVD in E:, or something like that). Maybe obvious, but have you check UAC settings?
EtherealN Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Another thought - does DCS have proper rights in the folders it's installed in? I think it tells the Launcher.exe how it went through writing a file in the game's temp folder, If it doesn't have full priviliges in that folder I suppose that could cause an issue. Though that should cause issues on startup as well, since Launcher.exe tells DCS.exe what to do on startup in the same way. ZaltysZ Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Do you use NewView? It causes crashes after mission exit. Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
NismoRR Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I have UAC off, so no problem car arise from that, so the rights are there. I'm not using NewView. I was learning startup procedures last night, and was using the target practice mission to do it. I did get the "DCS Not Working" message after I quit, but when I went back to the mission review screen, the data was there. Showed the takeoff and landing times, which is all I did. Very strange. Maybe I'll try to re-install and place the game OUTSIDE of the Programs(x86) folder. I've seen this mentioned so many times, for many games, but always forget when I'm installing. Thanks for your help.
