Guymed Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Hello. I recently downloaded DCS for my other, DCS supporting PC, and when I tried to install the game (yes, the bin file was in the same directory), nothing opened. It just froze the computer. I was using Windows Vista, with 2GB ram, a 956MB ATI Graphics Card, an Intel Dual Core processor, with 2.17GHz. How can I get the installer to load? If I can't, I'll have to get a refund and not be able to play it :( Thanks!!
EtherealN Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 It would appear no-one has one. :P Further information would be needed to make a real elimination process here because that's just weird. What drivers do you have for your components, is anything overclocked, do you have any special codec packs installed, any protection software that might be getting involved when you start executables? So on and so forth. The more info, the better the odds that someone can spot something. 159th_Viper Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 (edited) .........and when I tried to install the game (yes, the bin file was in the same directory)..... Assuming here that the data1.cab file and the setup.exe was in the same Folder located in the same directory? Guymed Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 Well, because it's windows vista, I have to right click it and hit run as admin, but I tried opening it both as admin and as not. I have Kaspersky Anti Virus 2009, which I don't think is the problem. Codecs, certain drivers? No, just the normal ones. Is it because I stored it in a too-deep directory?

EtherealN Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Is it because I stored it in a too-deep directory? This is possible. Though as Viper indicated, directory and folder are two different things - a directory would be, f.ex, C: or D:, whereas nested below those are folders. Being too deep can cause issues, so if you have not done so you should try running them placed in C:\ Also, you should make very certain that the anti-virus isn't blocking the program's execution - there have been a few 'false positives' with other anti-virus softwares. Finally, do you have UAC active and if so does it prompt you? Guymed Posted April 17, 2009 Author Posted April 17, 2009 Sorry about me being mean, I'm just p*ssed because I spent 50 bucks and it doesn't work.
EtherealN Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 That's understandable, but please realize that things happen. It is absolutely impossible for developers to test and check out all possible mutations of PC systems so sometimes it'll go to crap and it can be a bit of an issue to find out what makes it happen. The setup program freezing the computer is a pretty drastic thing to happen though, and normally it should actually be impossible for a program to do so since it does not have direct access to the hardware (unless it's ring0'd or is a driver) and should also not be able to usurp cycles outside of what the OS assigns to it. That does make me suspect that there is something in the operating system that really doesn't like what's happening - it could be the anti-virus getting a false positive and something in the anti-virus crashing and the OS then getting confused, it could be windows defender doing a funny maneuver, etcetera. The only time I've actually had something similar happen to me in the last 6 months or so was on my laptop which also runs Vista 32 and has 2 gigs of RAM. I was opening up some textures in GIMP and saw my RAM utilization shoot up like a rocket to 100% and shortly thereafter the computer got extremely unresponsive even beyond the normal swap-file sluggishness one can get. So do check out your memory usage. It might be that you have a memory leak in some system process that, along with the installer being big and using a lot of memory, fills up your RAM and someone gets the computer to totally freak out. What size swap file do you have and how much free HDD space do you have on your hard drive(s)? Guymed Posted April 20, 2009 Author Posted April 20, 2009 What's a swap file? And I have 94.1GBs of remaining disk space.
Guymed Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 Is ANYONE gonna respond? (no offense to everyone)
EvilBivol-1 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Sorry Guymed, I'm not sure if I can help, but I can tell you that anti-virus programs and codecs have been known to cause problems. I would first attempt to disable the anti-virus program. If that doesn't work, try unisntalling your codecs. Have you turned off UAC? - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Guymed Posted April 22, 2009 Author Posted April 22, 2009 I don't know what codecs are, but I know disabling the anti-virus might help. But, I'm not sure I can do it because the DCS supportive computer is shared, not personal.
nemises Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Codecs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec Things used to decode video and autdio streams. if you whatch any "non standard" video formats (divx, xvid, matrovska) , then you will have specific codecs installed...you might have a codec pack installed with dozens of differnt ones. Unfortunately, some of these can cause issues (allthough, to be honest, if the package installer isnt running, I wouldnt have thought a codec could cause it). Swap file: Is an area of hard disk space reserved for the OS to "swap" out what is in physical memory .. kind like using a bit of disk space to "pretend" it is extra Ram...of course, very very slow ram!. You can see what your swap file is set to by looking at your system properties (sorry no viasta here, so no blow by blow) .. chances are , if you don't know what it is, then it will be set to "let windows automatically manage my swap file" , which, as long as you have plenty of space on your system hard drive (C: usually) , say more that 2 GB, you should be fine. Try this, Have a look at your task manager and look at running processes (perhaps organised alphabetically) .. leave it runing Next, run the setup.exe. Have another look at your processes...has a new process spawned called setup.exe or MISInst.exe or anything like that ? If not, then I propose you re-download the setup.exe
EtherealN Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 You can also google for Process Explorer, and run that while attempting the setup. It should hopefully be able to give some further analysis of what it is that is happening. Even if you might not understand it's output, it is possible that someone here would be able to spot something.
