GPU compatibility & FFR — Is the Crystal Light your next VR headset?

The DCS test uses QVFR which is no longer officially supported for pimax. I would like to see what pimax FFR2 looks like.

Quadviews can be used with the Crystal.

Can I assume there is a fixed fr option with quad views? And, is it generally better than the foveated render option in Open XR? Thx

And yes, pretty sure crystal light is mu next headset.

Yes it can. From another post by mbucchia it looks like this is stable and likely to be so for the long term.

Yes. QVFR can be used in fixed mode and is better than the one in OXRTK with the caveat that QVFR relies on sufficient CPU overhead. If the CPU becomes bottlenecked then FPS can be worse.

Isn't this headset supposed to be released some time this month? I'm surprised that there hasn't been any units sent out to content creators / reviewers yet if that's the case. Without DFR I'm really interested to see this reviewed.

LOL - I asked the question, and within 24hrs get an email from them saying that they're shipping the units to early adopters. I guess it won't be too long before we start seeing reviews.

Yep, Crystal Light is really shipping soon, it's very ready.

That's real great to hear. Do we have any information on how the new Fixed Foveated Rendering version 2 is supposed to work, and what we can expect for it with DCS?

I was going to hold out for the Crystal Super, because I consider DFR a must for performance reasons. However, with my HP Reverb now in 'limp mode' (the infamous cable break issue has struck) - I don't know if I'm going to be able to hold out the 8+ months before buying a VR headset, so I'm considering all options again. I'm very excited by what I see with Pimax and PC VR! Now seeing what I perceive to be an official Pimax rep here on the DCS forum (?) is even more encouraging! 🙂

Is there any indication as to how this will run with an RTX3080? I'm looking to replace the Reverb G2 due to the Windows Mixed Reality shutdown that's looming, but I do not want to upgrade my entire PC to do so. All the reviews I've seen typically use an RTX4090 and while I'm very happy for the reviewers it's not a typical setup.

I'm happy with the performance of my PC and set-up as it stands, it's running everything just fine. I'd like to plan for the next VR headset. The other alternative is the Quest 3, but when you buy all the bits to make it a worthwhile simming headset, it costs as much as the Crystal Light.

  • Windows 10 Home - 64 Bit
  • Intel Core i7-9770K
  • 32GB DDR4 RAM
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti
  • Oculus Rift S

The 'indications' are that with all the options given (FFR, the ability to downscale, run at at 72hz instead of 90hz - of course 60hz is also an option of course) - that the Crystal Light should be able to run at the same performance as the HP reverb with "just as good, if not bettter imaging". Of course, there is room to increase those to amazing/incredible results by increasing these values to what your system can handle.  So the indications I've received are at the very worse, be able to replicate the G2 with no screen door effects, but very likely to be able to achieve more than the G2 with the various options made available to us.

Of course, these are 'indication's only. The practical confirmed results of this are yet to be determined. Only a handful of people have had their hands on the Crystal Light, and the real important data will come from real world users with the actual systems when we finally get it in our hands, and not from working through the tech spec's and options.

If your G2 is still working OK for you I would strongly recommend to hold off and wait for real world results first. I can't - my Reverb is all but cooked, so I've had to take the plunge and pre-purchase just to get 'in the queue', although looking at some of the chatting on discord at the moment it sounds like the release hasn't gone quite as planned, with some users who ordered earlier than others not yet receiving their order status updates, where more recent buyers have. That's not going to affect the results of the performance, but it's probably another reason to hold off just at the moment until the issues with orders & shipping have been sorted out as well.

There is the big screen VR headset as an option for you as well that might be worth checking out. Apart from that, I'm not sure what other VR headsets are currently on the horizon.
