To change storage for Phantom.

I've had to remove 4 aircraft in order to make room for tomorrows download on my 250 gig Evo Plus, so:

If I buy a 1000 gig to replace it, is it just a case of pulling the old one out and plugging the new one in, (sfter formatting), then downloading the full OB game?

Thanks.

It depends. If you still have cables and connections, you can leave the smaller one in and then move everything over.

If you do not or cannot keep the small one, either move everything to a different drive or temporary storage and move it over once you connected the new one, or you can, like you said, delete everything and download everything again. It is up to you to decide which method you want to use. Just be aware of backing up any data you want to keep, like personal data, key config files for DCS, perhaps game saves from other games etc.

Is that also the SSD where your OS is installed on(savedgames/dcs...)? If not just copy/paste the DCS folder from the old to the new SSD. The worst that could happen is you have to run a full repair, so DCS can download missing files but you don't have to re-download/install the whole DCS.

Always backup your DCS 'saved games' folders, especially the whole 'input' folder in 'saved games' outside the root DCS folder so you don't wipe your keybinds if you're about to wipe the windows root storage driver.

If you pull the DCS files over to the new SSD, just run the DCS installer and point at the files path that you just pulled and it will perform the verification of files instead of downloading the whole thing. It is fairly quick.

Thanks for the replies.

The saved games are on the O/S drive and I can save input.

DCS is on the small drive with nothing else on it, but I don't have a spare slot, so the new drive will have to go in the same slot.

Do I have to delete the stuff in the mod manager first or can I just pull it and put the new drive in its place?

Just a suggestion. I see that you have some drives. If the new SSD is connected to a Sata port then simply disconnect an existing disk and connect the new SSD to it. Then you can copy from the old SSD to the new SSD. Then reconnect the disconnected disk.

Unfortunately I've only 1 slot for this type of drive. Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-e 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive,

which runs through an adaptor directly into the board, so the old 250 will have to come out before the new can go in.

..

I understand. If I want to expand my NVMe, I have the same problem. The 1 TB is almost maxed out in my case. (Only original DCS no mods)

It's gotten to where you almost need a 2TB, even if you don't have every module ever installed. Especially if you want to cram Kola in there if it gets some more improvements. If you stay slim on modules a 1TB will probably continue to work but liveries, mods, maps, etc. can really start to blow up drive space.

If you can somehow swing a 2TB, it will give you a lot of future proofing but I totally get if that's not in the budget. I'm looking at doing this myself, getting a 2TB to replace/supplant my current 1TB DCS drive.

I think I'll get the 2 TB and be done with it, £173.

The long download seems inevitable, for transfer.

I don't think you'll be disappointed, it will give you tons of breathing room to try/fly modules as you please, have piles of skins, without having to rotate modules out.

Faced with the prospect of a 36 hr download, I had a bright spark moment.

I took the sd card from my drone, which will take DCS through the USB.

Copy time is 4.5 hrs, then back onto my new 2TB M2. Job done, (I hope).

Sequence of events, installing a new 2 TB, M.2 Evo plus, into a 14 yo PC. (For reference):

Remove all modules.

Move 220gb from full 256gb Evo to USB SD 256 card. 4.5 hrs.

Replace 256 with 2TB card into same PCIe 2.0x4 slot. It didn't register in Disc manager and remained as a 256 card and not usable.

Put 2tb card into a slower PCIe 1.0 x1 slot. It registered as a 256gb/1.6tb partitioned card.

Moved DCS from SD to M.2 card. 4hrs.

Added Update, 20gb with F4, 3 hrs. Re loaded all Modules.

Added Samsung Magician. It benched at about half speed of an SSD, at 208/192, but ran DCS with F-4, perfectly OK.

Entered Bios and changed PCIe 1.0x1 slot from 1 lane to 4 lanes. BM now at, 831/765.

Added Kola map. 14 hrs D/L. Added Normandy map.

Put 256 card back into original 2.0 slot which conflicted with new 2 tb card in 1.0 slot and wiped it out. (PANIC).

Removed 256 card, but still no 2 tb card showing.

Put 2 tb card back into PCIe 2.0x4 slot and it showed up, (PHEW}.

BM now at 1579/1453 with DCS at 419gb with all my modules installed.

Basicly, the new card has hijacked the old cards identity and placed it in a partition.

It works perfectly well, so I think I won't touch it again.
