anybody done that swap? is it worth bothering with?

I assume you mean from 5900 to 5800x3d?

Yes, did it (for testing)

No, mostly not - unless you fly VR (~20% better cpu frame times) or are otherwise often affected by cpu bottlenecked scenarios.

I have not done the swap, but theoretically, you will gain from 10% to 20% FPS (depending on your hardware, settings, resolution, etc...)

Up to you to assess whether it is worth or not.

Only when you are cpu bottlenecked, which you are not with the 5900x in most scenarios.

I would put it this way - if I was to build a DCS (or gaming) exclusive PC and had to choose - I would probably pick the 5800x3d. If I already owned a 5900x and had to pay extra to switch - I won’t.

i do fly vr and would like all the frames i can get lol. i have a6800xt gfx card and they seem well matched, ie sometimes im cpu bound, others im gpu bound

7700k @5ghz, 32gb 3200mhz ram, 2080ti, nvme drives, valve index vr

then you are better of with a X3D I‘d say…. unless you need all the cores for highly parallelised productivity applications.

Absolutely this.

Free professional advice: Do not rely upon any advice concerning computers from anyone who uses the terms "beast" or "rocking" to refer to computer hardware.  Just...don't.  You've been warned.

While we're at it, people should stop using the term "uplift" to convey "increase".  This is a technical endeavor, we're not in church or at the movies - and it's science, not drama.

I switched over from a 5800X to the 5800X3D and the benefit was minor, but as mentioned by someone else already the frametimes are better which gives you an overall smoother experience. I have another GPU, so the test might mislead you slightly, but shows the direction.

Here is the link to the Video I created for this: Comparison 5800X vs. 5800X3D

I hope this helps.
