GatorNutz Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 It would be great if there were a quick Jester command to ask him to start (and stop) providing speed callouts like he automatically does when in BFM...but on command. Sometimes, I'd like to keep my head out of the cockpit and need to know my speed. If a human were in the backseat, I'd ask them to give speed when needed. 7
markturner1960 Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 Plus one on this, in my albeit limited BFM engagements in the F4, i seem to get very few if any speed callouts from jester compared to the F14......Is this correct or should it be the same? Jester has airspeed instruments in the back..... System specs: PC1 :Scan 3XS Ryzen 5900X, 64GB Corsair veng DDR4 3600, EVGA GTX 3090 Win 10, Quest Pro, Samsung Odyssey G9 Neo monitor.
=475FG= Dawger Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I have never heard Jester mention airspeed in the Phantom
WinOrLose Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 I was about to ask the same thing but also to call out altitude. Jester can give call outs on final and AAR so maybe an option where you request inflight call outs and he does so every 30 seconds until you turn it off. Very useful on penetrations, holding patterns etc etc when you are trying set up nav aids and change radio frequencies etc. I'm guessing real pilots had a sensation of movement in the aircraft when heads down which us sim pilots don't get.
=475FG= Dawger Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 Speed callouts in BFM would be fabulous. Speed and Altitude callouts during direct bombing would also be great. Jester doing anything useful would be welcome.

I think he currently also does not specify if the bandit is high or low when calling them WVR. But my understanding is lots of this will be added as he does some of it for the F-14 already. His WVR callouts are super weird. Constant callouts when the bandit is in the front windshield but almost nothing when the bandit is rear hemisphere until he says “ He’s at our 6” which he wouldn’t be able to see. And no reference to high or low and you cant tell if he is referencing the clock position to the bank angle or the ground track. Mostly he is an SA drain in a fight and I usually just tell him to shut up. And I know “Its all planned to be implemented” but I don’t get why the primary purpose of the Phantom WSO was completely ignored in favor of useless chatter, repetitive humor that gets stale very quickly and the same questions every cold start.

I agree it can get super frustrating sometimes. Personally I find him incredible in the F-14 WVR (BVR, a good human is superior) and he's saved my bacon so many times, he's part of the reason I love flying the Tomcat. I'm keeping my fingers crossed we'll get the same in the F-4 soon!
Kageseigi Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 Jester is such a complex "person," I'm starting to think that he needs his own section in the Special Options screen so each player can customize what kind of calls they want Jester to make during different situations (via check boxes). That way, all of those options won't necessarily need specific binds or selections in the Jester Menu. I would also like to repeat my request for the ability to ask Jester for a bandit location callout on demand. Perhaps even two different options... one for a focused target, and one for non-focused bandits (if I'm chasing one guy, Jester can ignore him, but keep an eye on my tail). I definitely support support the option for speed/altitude/etc. callouts. Even if it isn't something a real WSO would do normally, it could help us digital pilots... if for no other reason than we don't have the same vision capabilities that real pilots had (whether it be to limited FOV of monitors/VR headsets, lower resolution, or some other factor). Even something as simple as looking down at my airspeed gauge in a dogfight can be a major mistake for me when I'm in a dogfight. I use Track IR, so I can't see my instrument with just an eye glance... I actually have to move my head/neck to bring it into view... and then I have to return my head/neck to exactly the same position to have a chance at requiring a tally on the target (which can be a pain to do with the TrackIR sensitivity... especially if I'm using any kind of zoom level). I've actually had to export my speed to a tablet so I can glance down with my eyes only. I've lost way too many targets when I move my head, especially if they're low and have trees behind them. I simply cannot find them again. 1
Dragon1-1 Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 A Phantom GIB would definitely call out speed and altitude (only if necessary, but "watch the deck" is even in training materials) in a dogfight. Larger FOV doesn't matter, the pilot simply cannot take his eyes off the bandit in a dogfight. Lose the sight, lose the fight, and if you stop looking at the guy even for a moment, you might not find him again, particularly during a close fight, or during nose to nose flow. AoA could be felt through the seat (some of us have that option via seat shakers), but it's definitely helpful to know how fast you're going, exactly. In fact, there's a lot more that Jester should call out. During bombing, for instance, he should tell you to pickle when you hit release altitude, and maybe also notify you if you're fast or slow. At least in Vietnam, the backseater was heavily involved in the attack, even if the pilot was the one actually flying the plane.
