The manual states that the SUU-23 gun pod is loaded with 1200 rounds of ammunition, but it actually fires only 639 rounds, the same as the gun inside. Also, I believe these gun pods eject empty casings after firing, but no casings are ejected. Is this just not implemented?

Had you selected the podded store? Not just firing the nose gun? 🤔

I have selected a pod store.
The nose gun has 639 rounds, but the SUU-23 has 1200 rounds, so it should simply take almost twice as long to run out of ammo, but the current version runs out in the same amount of time as the nose gun, so perhaps I have the wrong number of rounds.

I made a video comparing the seconds for clarity.

Do you have any reference for that? The main gun is for example closed circuit. I am trying to dig up their technical manual in the meantime.

From GAF TO 1F-4F-34-1 page 1-157 it describes that the case/cartridge on the SUU-23 is ejected from the lower left side if the pod with sufficient velocity to clear the aircraft.

Rather famous footage of a SUU-23 affixed to a Phantom that's cut into nearly every aviation-related Vietnam documentary I've seen. Casings are clearly seen being expelled from slightly left of center.

Despite the title suggesting otherwise, the video shows a SUU-16, not a SUU-23.

Definitive SUU-23/A pics I can find only show the right side for some reason. The one shot I found of the left side shows a link ejection port, but I can't find any pics of the bottom. Do closed systems typically eject links? I always thought they kept both the casings and links.
