Fly once every few months and every time it become hours of setup

I literally try to fly once every few months, when I get in DCS it takes hours to get setup and I get so frustrated I turn it off again and have no interest in flying anymore because it becomes a setup nightmare.    Last time I tried installing openXR and it was complete stutters on a reverb g2 & 3080.  Went to try again today and I have no idea how to run it without OpenXR, been trying to uninstall all the open XR stuff and rebooting but DCS continues to start without steamVR.

How do you get rid of openXR and go back to steamvr?

So uninstalled everything and reinstalled, had no mouse cursor in game prior.   Now when I launch DCS it won't go in to VR.   The reverb g2 headset stays in the house things that's default and DCS never starts.  DCS is set to run in VR in the option.  Now, how do I get DCS to work with hp reverb g2?

Does the headset work outside of dcs?

Since you are probably not very active here and have not followed the developement, you may have borked some things there.

Firstly I would recommend to run a DCS repair.

Also want to let you know, that OpenXR is the default way of running DCS nowadays. You don‘t need to manipulate any files in DCS anymore like one had to back then.

You should to have „OpenXR tools for WMR (Windows Mixed Reality)“ installed in order to activate the OpenXR runtime on that. In that app you might also want to dial down the resolution % and you can chose to activate motion reprojection (I would recomment AUTOMATIC) for a smoother experience at the cost of some artefacts/wobbling.

Alternatively you can set SteamVR as your OpenXR runtime in the SteamVR options and run it via SteamVR. It should run better without SteamVR though.

Lastly a headsup: If you are running Windows 11, support for WMR will end very soon (or has it already?). If you are on Win10, you should be fine.

Also: what are the rest of your specs? (CPU)

Thanks for the feedback Phantom, last night I was finally able to get the non MT version running in steamVR and the mt version runs on openXR once I installed openxr toolkit. I think the reason for my poor performance was my openxr resolution was set to 100% and pd to 1, when I lowered openxr resolution to 50% performance was fine which confuses me a little because from what I see almost everyone runs at 100% on openxr.

'm on a 10600K processor, rtx 3080, 32gbram, and reverb g2.  Last time I played I gave up due to poor performance in VR, got excited about the Afghanistan trial so decided to fire it back up and try again.  Literally spent the last day trying to get it to start up.  Think I made some progress last night will probably spend the rest of the day trying to improve performance now.  I am on Windows 10 Pro, glad I never upgraded 🙂

Huh I had the opposite experience.  Last time I "got into it" it was weeks and weeks of interacting on forums and discord, trying umpteen different utilities, re-doing everything every two weeks.  (Not that I'm griping, fiddling with DCS can be fun)

Got distracted and was out of the game for several months.  I come back... to my astonishment, everything just works now.  Click and go.

Make sure you aren't making things more complicated than they need to be...

I'm still running G2 on my old dusty 6900XT and it's running like an absolute boss these days, utilizing the KISS principle. No oversampling, no undersampling, no add-ons, no hacks, no utilities.  Nothing between DCS and WMR (such as steam).  Click and go

Ryzen 5600X (stock), GBX570, 32Gb RAM, AMD 6900XT (reference), G2, WInwing Orion HOTAS, T-flight rudder
