Hilding24 Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 I am going to build/buy a new computer and will probably chose a 4080 or 4080 super depending on which I can get my hands on. I will mostly be playing DCS and il2 VR with my reverb g2. What would you recommend so that I won’t get bottlenecked(by too much at least) by the cpu.

kksnowbear Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 (edited) There is very little these days by way of practical competition for the 7800X3D where gaming is concerned. The 13th and 14th gen Intels *might have been* an option, spec-wise at least, before the current mess. But I personally couldn't feel confident in them after all that, nor would I consider recommending them in my professional capacity. The next gen Intels might be better...but then again, there's already a set of next gen AM5 CPUs. Just really hard to consider Intel, of late. Also if you intend to use the machine for productivity, a different AM5 might be in order. That would depend on exact workload and of course budget. Edited August 6, 2024 by kksnowbear Free professional advice: Do not rely upon any advice concerning computers from anyone who uses the terms "beast" or "rocking" to refer to computer hardware. Just...don't. You've been warned. While we're at it, people should stop using the term "uplift" to convey "increase". This is a technical endeavor, we're not in church or at the movies - and it's science, not drama.
av8orDave Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 I'd say it depends on what exactly you'd like to do with DCS. If you're planning on flying simple, single player missions, like shooting case I approaches on the supercarrier, for example, you can get by on many modern CPUs with acceptable performance, heck maybe even a rock-steady 72 fps. If you plan to fly complex missions in DCS Liberation, Retribution, or Multiplayer, the world's most powerful supercomputer won't provide smooth framerates in VR. 1
Aapje Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 It's really simple if you the only heavy thing you do with the computer is game: 7800X3D.

Also, remember that Windows is deprecating the WMR environment, so do not install or upgrade to Win 11 24H2 which is in the Release Preview Channel. Use Win 10 and you'll be fine until Oct 2025 when support ends or Win 11 with security updates only. In either case, those deadlines mean you'll be on an unpatched Windows. You will still be able to download WMR and the Steam software until Nov 2026. Definitely hold out for the super, or better yet a 4090. DCS and VR do need a supercomputer - or as close as we can get. And I agree with the 7800x3D recommended but consider that the new AMD processors are about to hit and that may help you get either a better price or a better CPU. Well no matter what I get it will be a big upgrade. Currently on an i7 8700k with a 1070. If you were to recommend intel what would be the closest equivalent to the 7800x3d? And probably will get a 4080 super because normal 4080 are really hard to get your hand on in sweden On 8/6/2024 at 7:00 PM, davidrbarnette said: I'd say it depends on what exactly you'd like to do with DCS. In dcs I mostly fly single but want to fly more multi but it gets very hard to fight anyone when my pc is trying to kill itself so flying models that are a bit more complicated tends to make the performance so bad I can’t spot much or fly that precisely either. But in multiplayer will the 7800x3d severely limit the gpu or will both be close to 100%?

I wouldn't get Intel right now due to the issues that all 13th and 14th gen are having. Intel says it's a microcode problem and are putting out a fix this month but since the issue was not handled well and is breaking the CPU's to the point that Intel has extended the warranty time. If you insist on Intel the i7-14700k but I'd go for the i9-14900k. It runs hot and sucks power. It's also might die from the previously mentioned issue. Also it's at the end of its socket life, so no upgrades where as AMD AM5 is upgradeable for a couple years. Morat Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 For the record I have a 13700k (regret!) and a 4080 running my G2. I'm CPU bound nearly all of the time, I used to be GPU bound until the patch that increased multithreading a few months back.
