Hello all, I have upgraded my entire PC except for the GPU. Now that I have a little jingle in my pocket, I was considering retiring my ole 2070 and upgrade to 1440p. I was considering the following. The 4070 Super, 7800 XT or 7900 GRE. I was wondering if anyone was running these? My current rig I9 12900k, 64 Gs of Ram, SSD, and 2070 GPU. Thoughts?

All of those should work well with DCS at 1440p, from what people have said on this forum. The 4070 Super will have the advantage of it being more common, so it being easier to find guides to tune it. The AMD cards might give you better FPS per dollar/euro/etc, although that depends on your local pricing.

Personally, I don't see the point in paying so much (550,00€ in my area) for the RX 7800 XT, which in practice gives exact same performance as the older RX 6800 XT.
So, for me, it's automatically excluded.

Between the RX 7900 GRE 16GB and the RTX 4070 Super 12GB, now that's not as easy to decide. 🤔
If it's not for VR, and if it's a 1440P res. monitor, both will work really well, even with DCS.

Personally, even after a heavy bias for ATI / AMD, for many years*, my preference is Nvidia. (*and boy, how I kept with the RX5700XT through that very dark first year until its drivers were sorted!)
But these days even FSR3+ is close enough to DLSS, and Adrenalin drivers are okay.

I think you should ask yourself this question...

  •  Do you want a very familiar experience to what you have had with the RTX2070, usage wise, but better and with a LOT more performance?
If so, get the RTX 4070 Super 12GB.

  •  Do you feel like changing to something different, with no problems to quickly adapt to unfamiliar things?
If so, the RX 7900 GRE 16GB may be right for you.

I had the GRE.  It was not stable in VR.  I gave it to my son, and put my 3080ti back in.  He loves it for 2d.  I believe the 4070 super with 12GB's is the sweet spot right now if you gotta buy a new card now.  I would only move from my 3080Ti now once the trade war settles down.  I don't think Nvidia can ramp up 4090 production that quicky outside of China.  I think we're stuck here for awhile.  If you got the cash, 4090.

@LucShep ANd what if I wanted to get into VR down he road. Does it matter about the GPU?

I definitely dont have the cash for the 4090...I said a little jingle lol. 4070 Super is $70 more than the GRE.Hmmmmm

My experience with AMD in VR is only with older models, the RX5700XT and RX6900XT, but I have to say that it was not a good one ("tear" artifacts, bad frametimes, so many darn issues, which back then imediately went away with an RTX3060Ti). Nvidia has been and still is ahead in the VR camp (IMO), noticeably so in my experience (zero issues).

But if there's no VR in the plans, and it's for a single 1440P monitor (not really meant for 4K res., but can also do), then I'd say the 7900GRE and 4070Super are both very good.
In that, and again like I said in my previous post, you have to ask yourself "that" question........ 🙂

PS:
$70 becomes pocket change, if it's something you value to last more than a year in use.

It does. An AMD card that has the same performance as the Nvidia equivalent in 2D will often suck in VR. One reason to stick is otherwise overpriced Nvidia cards is better VR support.

For VR, I could recommend a 3090. While it's not a 4090, you can get it surprisingly cheap, if you have some patience and look out for a good offer. It's a massive power hog and it's so huge it won't fit in every case, but it comes with 24GB of VRAM, which is important for DCS, particularly in VR. I don't know if it outperforms a 4070 Super otherwise, but I'm very happy with mine.

Yeah I went ahead and pulled the trigger and bought a 4070 TI Super. I bought the 2070 in 2018 I think, so its time. It will be in Friday, so Friday night I will see how it works....Thx for the advice

Price difference

Yeah. Too expensive for now. Maybe it will make more sense in a year when the 5xxx line is already released.

The best case scenario is that the release drags out so long that they can put 3 GB chips on the 5070, so it will get 18 GB. But I doubt it.

I got me this 7800XT a month ago and cant complain, coming from a 1080ti.

You need some hours playing with FSR and AMFM and what they do and how they do it but once I goit that sorted and disabled 1 CCD I am finally happy with this card.

I highly recommend a VRR Monitor with AMD FreeSync. Mine is not as it only supports native Gsync and I am forced to buy a new one to enjoy smoother gameplay.

Once you had Gsync or FreeSync and get stranded with none of them you really appreciate what they do, take a lot of strain from your eyes and brain.

@BitMaster I am interested in buying 7800XT and I would appreciate your feedback on average fps you get and settings in both Catalyst control Center and DCS.

I set it to medium with a few things at high in DCS, like view distance and clouds. You have to fly and see what scenarios are ok and where you might drop below 60fps, which rarely happens.

In Catalyst all I set is Low Lag ,Enhanced Sync and FreeSync. That's basically how I run all games. Where supported, you can use AMD's FSR instead of TAA for better image quality ( hope I got those terms right, LoL ).

FSR3 Frame generation and upscaling...I dunno...they give better fps but come at a price, latency and lesser quality in some cases. For any not-so-fast-paced game this is better suited but on the othe rhand, there you dont really need it, so I dont really get the idea behind it if more FPS means also worse latency, that's the wrong priority in my world.
