Agreed that you won't protect "commercial rights" directly with nukes, but not protect sovereignty? Having nukes and delivery systems is a mighty deterrent to invasion, and therefore protects one's sovereignty.

And Iran does share a land border with one nuclear power (pakistan, which co-operates with the coalition in Afghanistan on security and has a problem with Taliban on it's own soil), they are ideologically and culturally opposed to another nuclear power (Israel), and have reasonable proximity to a further two (India and Russia), one of which has on occassion gone to war with one of Iran's fellow muslim states (Pakistan).

Add to that that they have land borders to no less than TWO countries that have recently been invaded by US-led coalitions.

I can understand if they feel threatened and feel they need the bomb to feel they have a strong enough deterrent against threats to their sovereignty - defending sovereignty is exactly what nukes do, although mostly (thank the gods) indirectly through the threat of their use rather than their actual use.

So, basically, if you (as a leader or official of a country) face a situation similar to that, getting nukes would be precisely to protect your "sovereignty".

Point taken. upon re-reading that one might have been slightly more than borderline, so I'll make a slight edit to try make it more on the point.

Apologies.

F-15 (thanks God) have never killed an airplane of its own size and class (do you know any different). Not to mention that tactical situation favoring F-15 big time in all killings that I am aware of. This is not to minimize the quality of this incredible aircraft, but these are just facts.

When deployed all A-A combat kills are not reported due to the tactics invovled, but F-15 stick actuators have scored kills against -29s and -27s that I know of while I was deployed.

The accidental friendly fire of an F-15 shooting down another F-15 is true. The pilot of the downed a/c was able to eject safely.

Qualify it or it didn't happen. ;)

Unless you mean MiG-27's, then yeah.

It wasn't the only F-15 friendly fire incident - there was another at Elmendorf.
