Wait4It Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 (edited) To me, the coloring on this map seems off. It all looks to have a very limited palette and desaturated colors (grey). I can sort of see the effect they are (probably) going for, but in my opinion this is not realistic, but more a movie effect. Sure some rocks/deserts are very grey in real life, but the greens and fields can be very green and other rocks are yellow or red. If you compare the trailer to the other video shown below, you can see what i mean. And i realise color grading is used in the video, but this does not negate my original point. (there are more colors in the world). The constrast between colors in areas like the valleys and the dry rocks is what makes the real fghanistan stand out. Honestly most DCS maps have some color bias.. Edited December 11, 2024 by Wait4It 5
Nealius Posted January 5 Posted January 5 That 4k video has been color graded with more saturation and higher contrast than raw footage. 3
Wacky Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Nealius likely has a point here. These kind of scenic videos are often given more "punch" saturation-wise in order to impress more. Without first hand experience, though, it is difficult to know what colors should look like and how much of an impact sand and dust do have on overall color saturation of the vegetation. Having said that, as a simulation which strives to be realistic, it would make sense for DCS terrain developers to keep the default color rendering as close to real life as possible. Anyone wishing for cinematic effects or different color rendering can choose one of the color grading presets in the game settings, or use Reshade to create a custom profile. 1
Nealius Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Just about every video or photo published, unless it's taken on a smartphone, has been color graded these days. 1
Wait4It Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 I know it has color grading. But what i'm trying to say is that the real world is not all grey/brown either. (that's movie-like color grading) My point is that they should strive for the most realistic coloring. The same as you would experience if you were there. (green grass/fields etc) Camera footage will never be reliable for colors.
